Do you think high school kids should read and be shown where their food comes from?!

Question: After all, high school students are bombarded with unhealthy food in schools, not to mention fast food commercials at almost every commercial break on TV.

Do you think it would be appropriate to have them learn about conditions in factory farms to show the other side to the meat debate?

Yep I think it's important for them to get both sides of the argument. How else are they gonna make informed choices in the future?

I think so I would love to see how many of them would come the good way after finding outthe truth/

Not only would it be good for kids in school but for everyone.

Yes. I think that would be a great idea if there was only any reliable source in the food industry. Unfortunately, propaganda rules the day and facts are distorted for the almighty dollar.

Who decides what is fact? Lobbyists. There's way too much $$$ involved to expect honesty at any level.

Oh, yes.
See, I'm a sophomore in high school, and let me tell you...the food at my school seems to get unhealthier by the day. In fact, last summer I became a Vegetarian, and I can't ever imagine going back to eating meat. And especially now, looking at the stuff they serve at school, with PILES of grease, and oil, etc. I can't imagine ever eating that!
I wish one day, at school they'd show some of the videos from possibly PETA and other places (one video on GoVeg.com that was pretty interesting...) to show them exactly what they're eating! I'm sure they'd be grossed out enough.

The only issue here, would be the fact that the school lunch programs, probably wouldn't allow it. They buy the food they buy for a reason, being IT'S CHEAP. And, if they were to show a video such as this one, I'm sure they'd end up making a lot less profit, because students would possibly be less apt to buy the lunches once they know where they come from. And, in turn, it'd be far too costly in their eyes if they were to provide more healthy foods for the students.

It's just a ridiculous scam, if you ask me.

dude that video was nasty i was barfing but the thing is they should really lable the food that has either GMO or regular food.

meat debate????Are you kidding? I know of a kids who do not know potatos and carrots grow in the ground and were horrified. Of course children should be taught where thier food comes from. They should also have to help grow it now and then. They also need to know that not ALL meat comes from those kinds of farms. Any time commercial farms are involved, you get that kind of horror. the old fashioned family farm was not a den of torture, etc. I am not a vegetarian, will never be a vegetarian BUT, I grew up on a small farm where the meat was grown in decent condition, not horror and filth. If a persons only exposure to meat production is the huge commercial ones, I guess then I can understand vegans and vegetarians a little bit better.

By a non-connected entity. I sure wouldn't want peta showing videos of that sort of thing any more than I'd want the NRA showing videos of the 2nd amendment.

I think that they should really already know. I think that parents should talk to their kids about things like that. Healthy eating starts at home. There are electives in most high schools about food. There are good farmers out there that do take good care of there animals. It's terrible that the big factory farms view animals as just a product.

Yes Kyle, but if you ask me, I think the teachers and parents need to be educated first. Some of them are still of the "you need meat" mentality.
But yeah, I think there should be a mandatory set of lectures on meat, possibly with an optional slaughterhouse tour.

hey thats really good idea,

No preaching just facts, - whereis the food from I agree with you about the commericals.

kids need to do a school program, about it,

I am 31, I am not at school any more, but i bet you things couldbe change.

so kelly, what are you going to do? to bring thsi education to the masses!

I'll support you buddy!

ok, ill still eat cheesebuergers and chicken and the ocasional steak...won't scare me into being a veg yeah its sad but

"If a cheetah could shoot his prey in the head instead of chasing it around do you think he would?"

why would you even think that High School age kids don't know where food comes from. That is one of the lamest questions i have read in quite a while. while some kids weren't paying attention in school others were. You really need to better know what you are talking about. Your flipping veggies come from factory farm. They bring in Illegals to harvest what you eat and pay them very little wages and no health care and treat them worse then any animal on any commercial farm. A Factory implies that they are assembling something like a car. You can not assemble a cow or a chicken. so get your terminology right and call it what it is a farm. and as far as being two sides to a meat debate 99.9% of real people would consider that debate as to have it rare or meduim rare.
ayfr

No, I don't. Because the type of films that would be shown, would be the films taken by Peta. I think Peta has an unfair agenda, and they use animal abuse videos as if those set an example for every farm, and every food resource. But I do think that kids should be informed on healthier eating options and wise food choices. Both vegetables, and meat.

I think everyone should read and see it.

My teacher wouldn't allow it. She wouldn't let us see the Invsible Children video. You can tell people of the horrors of slaughterhouses, but telling is lame. People need to actually see the truth for themselves. My teacher just doesn't seem to understand that. And she has a Master's Degree...

if by the time they get to high school students still don't know where their food comes from, you need to evaluate and perhaps overhaul the school system over all not just to promote a particular agenda.

It should be done and it should be fair. You want to show factory farms, good. But you should also show how crop farms displace whole species of animals out of their natural habitats almost to the point of extinction. You want to show how animals are killed, fair enough. But you should also show how other non-farmed animals are maimed and killed during the planting, growing and harvesting of crops. You want to show the horrible conditions of animals in factory farms, why not. but you should also show the child laborers involved in crop farms, all 175 million of them. Show the ones who are constantly sexually and physically abused. The ones that are kept in prison like "homes" so they can't escape. With no access to education, medicine/health care and the most basic of sanitation and leisure/recreational facilities. You should the videos and graphic photographs of those that are maimed and rendered invalid or even killed in accidents while wielding knives, shears and other farming/harvesting implements. the ones that one vegetarian here once posted that "should be grateful because at least she's not eaten" (even though she is repeatedly raped daily)

yes i do believe you should show kids (and some adults) where their food really comes from...

Absolutely I did a report as a speech in English class about all that stuff the meat, how animals are treated and not only that all the preservatives and additives they put in the meat and lots of other foods and how often the FDA bans them from food because studies show that they cause health problems. It got a lot of peoples attention.
