ive also heard that you should eat geletin, why is that?
so i just want to know if there are any other foods like that

MANY, MANY things are made from animal products. Gelatin (jello) is made from the boiled bones, skin, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered cows and pigs. Gelatin is in many commercial products, such as yogurt, ice cream, pop tarts (in the frosting) and many other common items. Doritos chips contain animal flavorings (you can visit their website for a list of what has animal products in it) Also, there is tallow (beef fat) in most fast food french fries. Your best bet is to read ingredient labels, and google any that you are not familiar with. Most things labeled "enriched", such as pasta, white flour, enriched rice, cereals, etc. are "enriched" with vitamins derived from animal sources. Same goes for vitamin supplements, cosmetics, shampoos, etc. It takes quite a bit of homework to realize how many things are out there. You will also want to avoid cheese made with rennet-it comes from the 4th stomach of slaughtered baby veal calves. You can buy some vegetarian cheeses-Cabot is one good brand.

You will be quite surprised to find just how many things contain dead animal by products. Yet another reason I make everything from scratch.

vegetarian is a grey zone, many eat animal byproducts.

vegans are true vegetarians: no meat, milk, eggs.....nothing that once came from an animal

gelatin is a meat product (believe it comes from the joints/bones)

if your a vegetarian you shouldn't eat meat or seafood. that includes ceaser dressing (fish), soup unless tomato (chicken/beef stock) and other things you may not expect. your not suppost to eat gelatin because its made with of horse hoofs. gross, ik. if your a vegan, you cant eat anything made from animals like dairy or animal fat. anything from animals

This is going to depend on exactly how "strict" a vegetarian you're going to be...

Some do not eat any type of animal products -- so no geletins (they use animal hooves to make that) ... or the use of lards (animal fat).

Some vegetarians are okay with some animal products - eggs & cheeses are okay.

Some vegetarians are okay with fish - but no other types of "animals"

Gelatin is made from bones and hooves, and yeah, you might want to avoid it.

The other biggie is rennet- in many many cheeses. It is usually obtained by scraping the mucus from the stomachs of calves who have been killed for veal.

When you go vegan, the list of ingredients to avoid is long indeed!

actually nothing is vegetarian. in a way plants are also meat. plants are living things. and when we break plants its like we are killing them. so u cannot even eat anything. good luck !!

Congratulations on your decision!! Vegetarians avoid gelatin because it is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry, mainly pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides. Rennet is also another to one. There are quite a few vegetarian cheeses so that wont be a problem.

Ally- she specified beans made with lard. Lard is the issue, not beans

gelatin is made from boiled bones and tendons, it is in a lot of things, look out for that one.

Rennet - is the curdled milk from an veal calf stomach...it is found in cheese, if you see microbial enzyme, then that is what replaces rennet in the cheese.

Lark, what out for sauces, lots have meat broth....

here is list, but most you may never see.

Good luck...I hope you love it as much as I do.

gelatine, rennet, lard, etc...

skittles. starburst. mrs. bairds' apple pie. top ramen. anything w/ animal by-products.

I am a vegetarian, and the foods I don't eat are: meat and fish. Geletin is something you shouldn't eat because it is made with cow bones. But beans, and stuff are okay to eat.

Beans are very bad. So are kolorabi.

You want to avoid anything that is a byproduct of slaughter (in other words, something that the animal died for.) This includes lard, tallow, gelatin*, meat broths, rennet and anything that sounds like it's from a dead animal (you'll see ingredients like "chicken powder" - yes, it's really made of chicken.)

*Gelatin is avoided because it's a slaughter product. Bones, hides and connective tissues left over from meat production are boiled to create gelatin.

Here's some info on what vegetarians do and do not eat, from the Vegetarian Society: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/definitions.h...

"ive also heard that you should eat geletin, why is that?"

No, you should not eat gelatin. Go on Wikipedia and take a look. Avoid a lot of candy (gummy bears for example), marshmallows, Jell-O...

Avoid cheese with rennet (if you're a lacto-vegetarian and include dairy).

wel come to the world of vegetarian because of you more and more animals will save their lives thanks:)
Proteins: Body's protein needs can be provided by either animal or plant sources. Mixed protein diet obtained from various plant sources is better than animal protein and is recommended in diabetes, renal diseases and liver diseases. Mixed protein diet from different plant sources has been the pattern of diet in India for all vegetarians.

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are mainly found in plant foods; like cereals, grains, fresh and dry fruits, legumes, vegetable, greens, nuts etc. plant carbohydrates include' large amounts of starches, sugar and fibers which are important for gut functions. The body is better suited to a high carbohydrate diet than a low carbohydrate diet. In fact 55% of the food intake should be carbohydrate. All animal products do not contain carbohydrate which is essential for body.

Fat: Plant fats differ from animal fats in two different ways 1) they are cholesterol free 2) they generally contain more polyunsaturated fat and less saturated fats. Plant fats usually have higher polyunsaturated fat value than animal fats.

A diet which is low in cholesterol and which contains fat of a high PIS value is associated with a lower incident of coronary health disease.

Vitamins and Minerals: plant foods are rich in many vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is obtained by exposure of skin to sun light and this is not a problem in India.

Calcium: The vegetarians can meet their needs for calcium from dairy products. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Dark green vegetables are good sources of Riboflavin as are legumes and whole grain cereal.

Iron: The problem of iron deficiency is relatively common but vitamin C significantly enhances absorption of iron hence it is advisable for vegetarians to include with each meal a food high in vitamin C which as lime, citrus fruits or juices.

Zinc: Zinc is found in large number of plant foods.

Fiber: Fiber is found only in vegetarian food like whole grain cereals, legumes, greens, fruits, vegetable etc.

Thus in vegetarian foods all requirement of nutrition for body growth and maintenance is fulfilled. One can have a complete and balanced diet provided we take enough food which is as close to nature as possible in maintaining sturdy and disease free body. It is equally helpful in curing many diseases.

ADVANTAGES OF VEGETARIAN DIET:
More & more evidence is surfacing that directly links a prolonged non- vegetarian diet to diseases as cancers, heart diseases, diabetes, asthma just to name a few.

1. LOGEVITY: Vegetarian can expect to live 4-10 years longer then the non-vegetarians.

" Source: Seventh day Adventists study

2. LESS HEART DISEASE: Because of low fat, saturated fat and cholesterol content of the vegetarian diet the risk of heart disease is lowered. High blood cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of heart disease.

3. LESS CANCER: Up to 40% of all cancers are diet related. Cancer death rates have been associated with obesity and high fat / low fiber diet. Vitamin A & C are thought to be protective against colon cancer. Low fat diets protect against prostrate and breast cancer. Indoles, lignans, isoflavones, protease inhibitors which are present in plant foods and shown to be potent anti carcinogens.

4. LESS BOWEL DISEASE: Diverticular disease and appendicitis occur more frequently with low fiber intake as in meat diet.

5. LEES OBESITY & LESS INCIDENCE OF DIABETES: It is easier to plan a low fat diet for a vegetarian then for a meat eater. The fiber in plant food dilutes the energy & provides a satisfying meal without all the calories. Diabetes over the age of 40 seems to be related to obesity.

Get over yourself. Animals rights DON'T exist. Rights are a construct we extend to ourselves. There are no grounds for the animals rights and NO other animal misunderstands its place on the food chain except misguided human beings. You're an OMNIVORE-- get over it.
