Pop Cake....?!
Answers: I saw a recipe, if you can call it that, in a vegan magazine and I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of this. The "recipe" says to take a box of Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix and add about 10 oz of cola or root beer, then cook it. What would hold this all together? Wouldn't the cake just fall apart?
Yes, I've heard of this before...and I've actually tried a cake that was made like that.
Apparently, Weight Watchers encourages its members to do this as most boxed cakes call for eggs and oil - two things that add fat and cholesterol.
So yes. Just add the correct amount of soda (it can be dark soda, diet soda or light soda) and the cake will bake as normal. It will be a lot more moist and because of the carbonation, it will have more holes in it - thus making it "lighter" in taste and texture.
Have fun with it and give it a shot!
Cheers.
I haven't seen that recipe before but i think it would hold together.. I saw a recipe for a box of cake mix and a can of pumpkin puree.. so i guess.. you should try it.. LOL.. let us know how it turns out.. lol..
Yeas, try it and tell us how it works out.
But, I'm sure it holds together, because the recipe is on the side of the cake mix box.
stores near my home sell what they call 7up cake, or whatever the soda they used, though it sounds horrible beyond reckoning they apparently sell. as for your recipe, it must have work before at least once if it is in a magazine so go ahead and try it, but i would keep a barf bag nearby.
I doubt that would produce anything resembling cake, all of the pop cake recipes I have require oil and egg replacer along with the root beer and cake mix.
If you try it, let me know if it works!
I've heard of such a thing but it was called something different. I don't think it used 10 ounces though.... I don't know for sure. Just look up 'cake made with soda' on the internet. I think it makes it fluffier. But I don't think chocolate cake and root beer would be a good mix. Maybe a white or yellow cake with a mild soda like Sprite.
I made a cake in the past that had coca-cola in it, and it turned out beautifully. It was moist, but it didn't fall apart.
