Why are we only allowed to eat?!

Question: why are we only allowed to eat fish on friday?

Answers: why are we only allowed to eat fish on friday?

This tradition was developed by the Catholic church as a charity campaign. Fish used to be a lot cheaper than meat and poulty, so families were encouraged to buy fish for dinner one day a week and then give the money they saved to charity. Unfortunately, the tradition of eating fish on Friday remained, but the charity element was lost several decades ago. Does this answer your question?

You may wish to put this in the religion section.

A long time ago, the Pope's brother in law owned a fleet of fishing ships.

you might not want to put this into a vegetarian/vegan section, as neither eat meat

Do you mean
a) why are we only allowed to eat fish on Friday? We are allowed to eat it on any day of the week, though most people using this forum choose not to eat it at all.

OR

b) why are we allowed to eat only fish on Friday? - I was brought up Catholic and I remember the 'no meat on Friday' rule being dropped while I was still at school. I'm now 54. As far as I know no other religious or other group observes the rule. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you are Catholic during lent you are supposed to abstain from eating meat during Lent on Fridays. I'm not sure why fish is allowed. I never quite understood that. I've always assumed that it was because people who didn't know better were scared that not eating any kind of meat once a week would be unhealthy for them, so fish was allowed. However, my mom says that is was because Jesus was a fisherman and he ate fish.

This is just my opinion and I don't intended to offend anyone, but I really think that it would be much more of a sacrifice to abstain from all meat during Lent, including fish! Who knows, maybe if people got used to the idea of not eating any meat, they might decide that they like it! Just my thoughts on the matter!! :)

This is not a vegetarian question, it's a religion question.

Vegetarians don't eat dead animals and the Catholic church's designation of fish as "not meat" confuses the issue for us. They are really two separate things.

Clearly not a veg*an question. Although, I might add that you are allowed to eat whatever you should desire. Veg*ans can eat anything they want to - they choose to abstain from cruelty.

why is this in vegetarian and vegan section???
And people who eat fish thats not all you can eat on fridays it's just anything witout meat.
