Why am I being such a hypocrite?!

Question: I'm a vegetarian. and I love dooney & bourke and coach. I don't own any of their purses yet. Except one small purse from dooney and bourke I got as a gift. I love going on their websites and looking at their stuff. Why am I like this why do I like their stuff even though they use leather. Everytime I look at one of their purses I tell my self that it is an animal but I still keep wanting one and looking on their websites. I wish they would just not use leather.

Ah, don't be so hard on yourself. Just because your vegetarian doesn't mean you can't like a certain style.

It's awesome that you want to avoid leather and animal cruelty for fashion... so don't feel guilty, just look for other stores that sell cruelty free fashionable items-
Like Moo Shoes (I got my prom shoes there... the store location is in les manhattan, but you can order from the website)

You can check out this cruelty-free shopping guide: http://www.leapingbunny.org/shopping.php

Plenty of places have faux fur and faux leather now. Maybe even those big names will start going vegan soon too...

Because you're a vegetarian. I don't think I've met one yet who didn't use some animal product when it suited them. If you'd all just get off your high horses and realize we're all naturally omnivores maybe you could drop the charade.

Your Not, Vegetarians don't eat meat, but they can still have leather and those purses.

Your not going to eat purses or leather right?

your problem is you just have not found great non leather stuff, so go and do research, find stuff that you love and is not leather. simple.

start with mooshoes!

there is so much cool and great and non cruelty stuff out there, - do research! -

B/c when face the truth everyone is a hypocrite in some ways----so sdont beat yourself up & get up & try to do better.

Why am I such a hypocrite like this?

If you're feeling like a hypocrite it isn't because you're vegetarian. Vegetarianism is a diet. Unless you're eating the bag it's not part of the equation.

Because you're a chick. We like pretty things.

What you need to do is find a brand that uses faux leather and still looks cute.

Then when you get one you can pride yourself on standing up for your morals. It's empowering to know you can overcome your urges.

your no a hypocrite, you just wish that cute purses didn't have to be made out of cute animals

As consumers we are far removed from the products we buy. It's already made and has a price tag. For that matter why do the vast majority of people buy products which have used sweat shop like practices?

The answer in part is out of sight out of mind. The other part of the answer is spiritual. In other words if your heart is panging at you then please listen.

I have faith you can do what you think is best. Obviously you do not think you are accomplishing this because you call yourself a hypocrite.

At this point all you need is encouragement. You have made great strides for the betterment of all. This is something many people will never do in this lifetime concerning the suffering of animals. You should be proud of yourself.

Knowing all the things you have already accomplished the next step is easy. Believe it and it will become true.

If you own leather use it till it worn out or give it away. I don't believe burying it will do too much good at this point. The animal was killed might as well put its suffering to use.

The main point is to vote with our dollars promoting industrial practices that are ethical. And if you do happen to fall well pcik yourself up and try again.

I have faith you'll eventually work this issue out. You are at a crossroad which will determine much more than a simple purse. It will influence a load of decisions down the road.

I believe you have found the right momentum and all you have to do is simply work with it.

Take Care

Fantastic, Keep to your High Standards, killing is cruel ecspessialy when the babies need to die on such a cruel way.
Make a statement and stand for it I will be behind you

your not a hypocrite, you'd only be a hypocrite if you bout one and still said you hated people using animals like this.I also run in to trouble like this b/c i wanna buy a pair of shoes or belt that i fall in love with but then i soon find that they are made of leather so i don't buy them.

PSF11 should probably get off the computer sometime in the near future and realize that its not our faults that he's chemically addicted to meat because of all the antibiotics and hormones infested within.

But, to answer your question, it is possible to own these bags and follow a vegetarian diet. However, if you claimed to live a vegetarian lifestyle, it would be another story. For example, I follow a vegan diet because I feel healthier when I do. Yeah, the anti-cruelty and positive effects on the environment are motivation, but my health is by far my top priority.

So, if you're not trying to commit yourself to a certain lifestyle, but solely a diet, then I wouldn't worry about your love for designer bags.

complicated issue. And psf11 should shut the hell up. Yes you are being hypocritical, but i've never met any one who hasn't at one point or another been a hypocrite. It's just that now you have to ask yourself why are you a vegetarian? Did you do it to be in style. To be cool. To be heatlhy. To feel good about yourself for not eating animals. It's up to you. But you know what's great about the label vegetarian. It has no exact definition. so you can call yourself a vegetarian, but one who wears or buys leather products. Now as for me I wouldn't buy a leather product, but i wouldn't go so far as to bag on someone who did.

Some women like pretty things, and clearly you are one of them. Nothing wrong with wanting stylish stuff. You like the look of Dooney & Bourke and Coach. You wish they were a more animal-friendly material, so wanting them doesn't make you a hypocrite, although buying one might. But humans are masses of contradictions, and we learn to live with our imperfections.

As someone else suggested, there are stylish vegan bags from Matt & Nat and Amy Kathryn. MooShoes and Alternative Outfitters have cute stylish vegan stuff. Chinese Laundry has a few vegan styles as well. Google "vegetarian bags" and you may find more cool vegan stuff that will make you forget those purveyors of dead cows' skin bags.
