Family style dinner?!

Question: I'm going to this place tonight for my brothers blu and gold dinner for boy scouts. This is my first time as a vegetarian I'm going to be going out and be eating a family style dinner. I never really paid that much attention to what I ate when I ate meat.
What foods can I eat if I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian?
I know there is a soup and a salad before the meal. I don't know what kind of soup it is. It will probably be chicken noodle or something like that since It is a kids thing. But I don't really care I'll just skip the soup. So can you list the foods at a family style dinner?

Family-style dinner basically means that either there are large servings of each item on the table and you pass the dishes around, or it's a buffet. Eating out when you're vegetarian is easy! No different from eating at home - just don't take anything with meat in it.

Soup can go either way. If it's chicken noodle, obviously you can't eat it. But if it's something that appears to be vegetarian I always make a point of asking if it's a meat-based stock or if it's a vegetable stock. Even veggie soups are often made with chicken stock to give it more flavour.

Watch out as well for any creamed salad, like macaroni salad or potato salad. They often have tiny bits of ham or chicken in them that you can't always see right away. Also, if they serve jello salads or dessert, you shouldn't eat that. Jello in Canada is now made without gelatin, but I *think* it's still included in the US (I don't know for sure). Gelatin is an animal bi-product so you don't want to eat that. (And, on that end, marshmallows also have animal bi-products... though I doubt you'll eat those tonight!)

Other than that, just don't eat the meat, fish, etc! Good luck!

skip the soup it is sure to be a meat broth base
load up on salad
then maybe they will either have a pasta or a potato that you can eat and grab a few extra rolls
my son has his Blue and Gold on March 1st
enjoy

Family style dinner usually means that there is a large quantity of each item served in large bowls and passed around. Example: Large plate of fried chicken, large bowl of corn, potatoes, salad, gravy, ect. In other words, whatever they serve you just grab and help yourself.

here is what you do

1) becuase this is new, -eat load sof food before you get there, just incase there is limited choices for you.
2) scan the foods, see what you can eat - no meat
3) ask the waiteror anyonethat is helping with the foods - what they think you can have
4) Also if the person is helpful they'll even find some extra foods for you to have
5) ther eis always bread and pasta and veggies.
6) and desserts.

at the end of the meal, say thank you to the person that help you with your food. - that way if you go again, they'll know you are a vegeatrian.

Most of all have fun!

Look for potatoes, pasta, or rice for a "main dish". If the soup does not obviously have meat you can ask a server if it has chicken or beef broth. Salad is good, but check and make sure there's no meat (fake bacon bits are ok--they're soy). Vegetables are wonderful--make sure there's no bacon in green beans. Breads are fine. Baked beans generally are NOT vegetarian. Desserts should be fine unless there's jello or marshmallows--the Jello in the US still uses gelatin.

Eating out while vegetarian need not be a boring or scary event. There's usually plenty to eat at events like this. Good luck and have fun!

And if you're worried about being hungry you can always eat a PB&J before you go or after you get home.

That's impossible to answer. A family style dinner can mean anything. When I am going to an event like this..I usually eat before I go and pick at whatever is suitable for me when I get there.
