I ate lard today- can I still call myself a vegan?!

Question: I am (was) a vegan and I'm usually so careful about what I eat. However, today my brother bought me some potato chips, which are usually harmless. I didn't look at the ingredients and started eating them. Then I noticed that they didn't taste like regular chips and then I looked at the ingredients. There is was, LARD. After all these years of not eating animal products, I end up eating that.

I am so completely and utterly disgusted with myself.

While I am no longer vegan, I ran across this problem a time or two while I was. I think, because you did not know that you were eating an animal product, you can still consider yourself vegan. You didn't intend to eat the lard, it was a mistake. Some may argue, but it was not your fault. I know it's a disgusting thought knowing that you unwillingly ingested an animal product, but knowing that you don't want to eat anything made from animals is what makes you vegan.

ewwww lard in potato chips.

You can call yourself anything you want to. I don't think one small slip-up will ruin you forever. I think you are being a bit hard on yourself.

Yes. You ate it on accident.

Please tell us the brand of chips to validate your story. Thanks.

Interesting brand. Those chips make regular chips seem healthy!!...LOL

It's not about labels; it's about making the best choices you can. In principle you subscribe to and to follow a vegan diet. A freak occurrence like this doesn't negate what you believe in so don't be so hard on yourself.

No worries, babe. Just live and learn.

If you didn't eat it on purpose, of course you're still vegan. Most vegetarians are good at reading labels, even on potato chips because many have milk products. Learn for the future.

I'm also curious what brand these were.

Go bath in the Ganga RIver in India. (Also called the Ganges)

Do you want to be a vegan? Be a vegan.

Do you eat primarily vegan? 70%, 80%, or 90%??? Say that you are that much vegan.

If you think that you have to be 100% or nothing, you are likely to lose momentum when you backslide, but, if you understand that you are a human, and mistakes happen, and you know where you want to go and you constantly work toward that, that is all that counts.

You may be 100% vegan most days, and 75% vegan some days. What is your focus? Do you think vegan is what you want to be? Be honest with yourself, and then be honest with the world.
There is no harm in being mostly vegan, or even partially vegan, until you reach your goal of how vegan you want to be.

So, no, I am not going to condemn you for your potato chips (although I think that eating them was not the best or healthiest food choice).
Pick yourself back up off the floor and go be a good vegan to the best of your ability. Start now being a vegan.
If you backslide again, start again.
It isn't that hard. If you want it, you will get there eventually.
Good luck.

I'd say it was a mistake.

yes you are still one. it was an accident, happens to me often :(
