Will I be less intelligent being a vegetarian?!

Question: Hello, I have been a vegetarian for 1 month. However in a book I read they mentioned about essential fatty acids <EFAs>. They said "if one person eats a diet rich in saturated fats and poor in EFAs he may end up with brain cell membranes that are less flexible than those whoeats a lot of fatty fish". OK, I want to be a vegetarian but I don't want to be stupid...So...can anyone suggest any subsitution for fish?....<Other than soya beans and all type of oil>. Thanks a lot!!!!!!

We don't have to eat fish for essential fatty acids.

"Other than soya beans and all type of oil"--this is kind of confusing to me because "fat" and "oil" are basically the same thing. I guess you are referring to cooking oil?

The following is copied from an article written by a Registered Dietitian. I provided the link below; there is more good information if you click on the link.

The primary sources of essential fatty acids are plants on land and in the sea. Linoleic acid is found primarily in seeds, nuts, grains and legumes. Alpha-linolenic acid is found in the green leaves of plants, including phytoplankton and algae, and in selected seeds, nuts and legumes (flax, canola, walnuts and soy).

I dont think it makes a difference if you eat meat or not..you will be just as smart!=]

Take Omega 3 fatty acid tablets. Or if your lacto-ovo eat eggs that have Omega 3 in them.

hmmm
im just going to say from experience that i dont think thats true AT ALL
ive been vegi for two years, and im not stupid *awaits meat eater criticism*
but if you want---egg has omega 3 in it...
some eggs are made to have more so keep an eye out!
hope that helps
and keep up the vegi-ness!
Matt

If you are smart then you are smart, veggies or meat won't change that.

hahahahahaha if that was the case that would mean the bigger u are the smarter u are and trust me thats not true

Actually no, becoming vegetarian may make you more intelligent.

This report mentions a high correlation between vegetarianism and High IQ's

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/618075...

Plenty of intelligent members of society have been vegetarians:

Sir Isaac Newton
Albert Einstein
Nikola Testa
Leonardo Da Vinci

As for EFA's I reccomend taking Flax seed or Flax Seed Oil as a supplement, that is all you need. You should be fine.

Good Luck.

what you comprehend academically is different from what you eat, you will only becme stupid if you read stupid article.

I find that hard to believe.

I think you are fine. I can promise you, you wont see a drastic change in intelligence from simply not eating meat.

I'm fine. Actually raised my GPA this last semester, not that I credit that to vegetarianism I'm just saying that it is not going to hurt you.

Simplest answer would be - the avocado and flax seed.

There are others as well.

so what im getting out of this you don't care about the animals, and just care about looking/being smart.

no actually vegetarian IQ, IS ABOUT 10 POINTS MORE!

Your are reading stuff writen by the meat industry to make sure you don't stop eating meat, so they don't stop making profit!

I don't agree at all. I've been vegetarian all my life (due to religious reasons) and I'm in the top 5 percentile of my class. However, I highly doubt that being vegetarian has much to do w/ being "smart." You may want to stop reading propaganda from the meat industry..

Ground flax seeds are a better source of omega 3's than fish are. You can use the ground up seeds on cereal, in smoothies, as an egg replacer in baking, or take supplements.

Um, I doubt that being a vegetarian will significantly lower your intelligence, I wouldn't worry too much... :)

I never heard that but I have heard vegetarians have higher IQs than people who eat meat

would you mind answering my question

No, I don't believe that it will make you more or less intelligent. If you search hard enough you can find studies to support or debunk any claim anyone makes.

Flax seed oil is an excellent way to get EFAs in your diet. You can also eat olives, avocados, almonds, peanuts etc. Got to this website to see more information:

It's very helpful, and very thorough.

I think that the link between higher or lower IQ and Vegetarianism is a fallacy. The only link I can think of that would make it seem like we veggies are more intelligent would be the inquisitive nature many of us seem to have.

The people listed by Mikey Will were all "thinkers. " Many people who over rationalize things (that is not a bad thing) become vegetarians because they are acutely aware of (and possibly repulsed by) the process that gets meat to the table.

no.

your diet and your intelligence have nothing in common.

Actually it is said that vegetarianism and veganism raise your IQ.

Essential fatty acids are actually best to get in ground flaxseeds, they give you 6 times more than fish does. Also you can get them from flaxseed oil, seed oil, hempseed, canola (rapeseed), walnuts, algae, & tofu.

yes! been in the situation! got a "C" in mathematics when i bacame a veg
