I have recently gone vegan?!

Question: For health reasons and also because I'm sick of looking at meat on my plate and feeling guilty!

I have been told that 1 table spoon of poppy seeds provide all the calcium you need in one day so I'm eating them sprinked on my soup or salad, so no worries about calcium, but, I'm scared of getting anaemic and need to know the best way to get enough protein.

I'm eating loads of kidney beans, chick peas, lentils, beans (all varieties etc, but can you suggest anything else?

Cheers x

It sounds that you are already getting everything you need. Beans are excellent sources of both iron and protein so there's no need to feel you will become anemic or suffer from a lack of protein. Besides, anemia affects omnivores, vegetarians, and vegan at approximately the same rate so people who get anemic are most likely genetically prone to have iron deficiency.

Good Luck on your journey! My choice to go vegan is the most amazing thing I have done in my life!

Try tofu, nuts of all descriptions, soya bean paste (tempeh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempeh here's a link if you don't know what it is ), wheat protein

Also Miso

And Natto

Soya is good protein. Make sure you eat tofu and you could drink soya milk with added calcium. Lots of fresh veg and fruit too, naturally.

It is the iron you are looking for

Anemia comes from lack of iron. Things like spinach and other green leafy veggies are super high in iron. You can also get extra protein from adding supplements to your diet. Get a whey protein shake mix from the local GNC and mix it with soy milk. That will give you a little under 20 grams of protein in one drink.

Good luck! I am a vegetarian who has considered going vegan but I just can't! There are probably a lot of books/websites out there for the vegan lifestyle.

well done for joining us i am also one i eat at least 4 times a week fish but if you dont like fish you can now buy lovely meat free loafs burgers like veggie burgers, veggie fingers, eat plenty of soya and tufu products these are good for protein also olive oil spreads, you say you eat loads of kidney beans etc thats good.dont forget your veggies and fruits. goat products are better than cows products.

Dried fruits: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.j...

FYI: my best sources of Iron, is eggplant, I love it. I can make loads of indian foods with eggplant. and its very goo dfor your health.

Dark green veggies, spinach, brussel sprouts, & broccli are a good source of protien. Plus there are lots of vitamins in fruit - the brighter the color the flesh of the fruit, chances are, the more benefits it has for you. And it's delicious! Fruit is a sweet way to put dessert back in your diet once you've gone vegan!

I hope the links below help!
And I recommend picking up a vegan cook book. I have a Linda McCarthy book that has an entire intro about finding portien and vitamins in foods that never had a face.

try some sprouts.tofu is also a good way to get ur proteins.and for not becoming anemic, eat lots of dark green vegetables, and try to eat at least a pomegranate once every two days.
the darker the vegetable or fruits the more iron and vitamins and antioxidants they have....
good luck...

Oh dear me. It's not helthy to be vegan? Utter rubbish! I know way more many meat eaters who have unhealthry diets, I can tell you that.
I almost spat my juice over the keyboard when I saw someone had told you to eat fish. No, you can't eat fish.
It's iron you need in your diet to prevent anaemia hon. Have a look at these links, they should help you.

Good luck with it, and well done for your decision!

No no no!! Vegans do NOT eat fish, however if you like fish and don't mind eating meat (it IS meat) then go for it! You just wouldn't be considered a vegan.

Fortified Soy and Almond Milk. Lots of Tofu!

Vegetables--like spinach or salad--are your best choice. I am anaemic, and that's the tip everyone gives me. You should also try vitamin supplements; most of them contain iron.

Hope I helped!
