Does being vegetarian mean you will get ricketts?!
Answers: I have been vegetarian for the past 8 months and I feel great. My diet consists of: cereal, pasta for lunch, dinner (with a meat subsitute), I eat on average 2 or maybe 3 fruits a day. The other day my parents said that I was lacking something and I will get ricketts later on in life. I'm a 14 year old girl, average build and about 5 foot 6. Do you think I will get ricketts because I don't eat meat?
Rickets is a disorder primarily caused by lack of vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate, which leads to softening and weakening of the bones.
Here is where you get Vitamin D -http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/nu...
Calcium - http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/nu...
Phosphate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphate
:) Now you know, and you wont get Rickets :)
Good luck

NO.
It is possible to get childhood rickets but this is caused by a deficiency of vitamin D, not by a lack of meat.

Rickets is caused by a deficiency in vitamin D. Vitamin D can be obtained from some fish oils, from sun exposure and fortified milk. I don't think you'll ever have to worry about developing rickets.
Isn't ricketts from lack of Vitamin D? No, you're fine. Sheesh. Try adding quinoa to your diet. It's a complete protein.. like in meat.. which would be the only thing you could possibly be missing, but I doubt it. Good for you, by the way.
Of course not, unless you NEVER expose your skin to sunshine.
Another very good source of Vitamin D is mushrooms that have been exposed to sunlight for 10 minutes. I am not kidding! This was recently discovered. Shiitake mushrooms are the highest in Vitamin D, far more than milk. But they should be exposed to some sun before cooking.
Rickets comes from a deficiency in calcium and vitamin D, and has nothing to do with meat consumption. (except that too much protein inhibits calcium absorption.)
Vitamin D you can get by stepping outside. Several minutes of sunshine each day is enough to supply you with plenty of vitamin D. If you're still consuming dairy products, that's calcium. If not, other sources of well-absorbed calcium include calcium-fortified soy milk and juice, soybeans and soynuts, bok choy, broccoli, collards, Chinese cabbage, kale, mustard greens, and okra.
No. You can only get rickets if your bones are still growing. It's caused by vitamin D deficiency, but you can get that from sunlight so you don't need it in food. That's assuming you don't eat dairy.
You might want to think about where to get iron from though. Molasses, parsley, nettle tea and some other foods would be OK.
No just make sure you eat fruit too
