Home made hommus - any tips?!
I was just wondering if anyone has tips on home made hommus, including special recipes or unusual/exciting/delicious ingredients they've added to their hommus?
I'm thinking of experimenting but am not sure where to start!
Thanks in advance :D

I am assuming you have a basic recipe for hummus? You can basically add any kind of spice or seasoning that you like. Here are some ingredients you can add to spice it up:
jalapeno's - add 1/3 cup (more or less depending on how spicey you like it).
cumin - add 4 tsp to basic recipe.
curry powder - add 4 tsp to basic recipe.
1/2 cup roasted red peppers.
1/2 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes (drained).
Instead of using chickpeas, use a 15 oz can of black beans (drained) this is a bit different flavor that traditional hummus but is also very good.
Something else that is very good is using hummus to stuff mushroom caps. Roast and serve.
Hummus can also be used as a sandwich spread as a substitue for mayo.
it's a pain in the ***.
the powdered kind is better than the canned variety.
i like to add garlic, tahini sauce, and lots of lemon.
try adding some pealed red peppers lemon juice in your mix.
I love it like that .
Lots of green jalapenos add a good kick.
Degree of difficulty: Low
You need:
1 400g can cooked chick peas, liquid reserved
2 tbs tahini
1 tbs olive oil
? clove garlic
Juice of ? lemon or lime
pinch salt and pepper
Method:
In a food processor or blender, add all ingredients, plus ? of the liquid from the chick peas. Blend until smooth and creamy. Adjust consistency with more liquid if desired.
Serving Suggestion: Variations:
Stir through 2-3 tsp of sliced olives, or fresh chopped basil leaves
For a slight curry flavour, add 1 ? tsp curry powder to the mixture, with ? tsp cayenne.
Add 3 tbs toasted sesame seeds for nutty flavour.
GOOD LUCK! Hope this helps you out.
Add some cumin to your recipe, top with some chopped scallions and drizzle with olive oil. yum
Hummus is nice with crunchy oven toasted lebanese bread. yum =)
It is SOOO easy to make, we make it almost everyday...I eat it for lunch almost every day (high in iron).
So a can of chick peas with liquid in the blender
2 tbsp of tahini
2 tbsp of lemon juice
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
Blend in the blender
So, I have found that depending on which kind of chick peas you use, you might get more liquid or less...so we take out about 1/4 cub and blend, then add more liquid as needed.
You can add some cumin, pepper, paprika, roasted red peppers, coriander, cilantro, onions, sun dried tomato....almost anything really, but I like mine plain.
I find its good with veggies, on sandwiches, with pita and with roasted pita...I add some spices and dry it out in the oven, like pita chips. I also eat it as a side with rice.
I use organic chick peas, I worry about using all the liquid and pesticides, but my guy says that its not as good with organic...to each his own!
:) good luck
