Now before everyone starts getting on my case, let me just remind you that the Hare Krishnas as well as the Buddhist monks have been vegetarians for hundreds of years (or more) and have survived quite well without cr*p like "veggie burgers" or "veggie bacon".
Answers: Correct me if I'm wrong, but if someone is a vegetarian, why would they want to eat something like tofu sculpted into the shape of a turkey, or veggie "ground" (which impersonates minced beef)...? If someone was a vegetarian, I would assume it was because they didn't want to (for whatever the reason) eat meat, or anything that resembles and tastes (a little bit) like it!

Thanks for the link. I take it you have never seen a turkey ? They are about 2 feet tall, have legs, wings, necks, heads etc.....in what way does this picture look like a turkey ?
It looks like a vaccum packed bag of processed food to me. Only someone conditioned to think thats how meat comes would think it looks like turkey.

Tofu burgers are soooo dry....I'd only eat it if I were starving in a famine. My friend is a vegan, and ate that. I don't know how she can stand it. And it was because she went to a slaughterhouse that she began hating meat. Why eat something that looks like and tastes like meat if you hate slaughterhouses!?
Veggie-meat products are crap!
Personally, I don't really like imitation meats.They are usually quite expensive. They are highly processed, probably full of preservatives and artificial flavors to make them taste the way they do. I would prefer healthy grilled veggies.
That being said though, I have tried veggie sausages and soy bacon (which I like to call fakon). They were really good while I was transitioning from omni to veggie. But after a year of being veggie I kinda lost the taste for imitation meats. I'm vegan now and don't miss the taste of meat at all.
These products are good to have as a treat, but are not necessary for a vegan or vegetarian diet. Not all of us eat or like them any way.

yeah i think its a crazy idea, but some people who ain't vegetarians like to try the different menus, but want it to look like something they are familiar with. no accounting for peoples vagaries.
The urge to keep on eating the foods we were brought up on can be very strong. Just ask any dieter! I guess it helped humans before an understanding of nutrition to keep on eating the same balanced diet that previous generations had thrived on. In this respect vegetarian 'fake meats' could perhaps be compared to artificial sweetners and diet sodas which allow people to make changes to their diet while minimising the difference in taste, and without having to find whole new foods and drinks to consume.
Not every vegetarian is a skilled or even enthusiastic cook, and these products also allow them to make simple balanced meals without having to learn a whole new cuisine or way of cooking, changing the habits of a lifetime, or having to study too much about the nutrition levels of other foods to ensure enough protien etc. in the diet.
As for the Buddhist monks: not so. Fake meats such as wheat gluten prepared to resemble meat products - even down to the dimples in the skin of roast duck - have been produced by Buddhists and people avoiding meat in Asia since ancient times. Obviously people with a vegetarian tradition spanning centuries will have gradually developed a separate vegetarian cuisine not reliant on meat analogues, but that is not to say that these do not exist. Perhaps 'first generation' vegetarians eating familiar dishes pepared with 'fake meats' are just the first stage?
It's really just a case of wanting variety in your diet - who doesn't crave that?
Some veg*ns liked the taste of meat and miss it; by eating substitutes they are sticking to their decision not to contribute personally to animal exploitation and suffering, but still having a taste they enjoy.
Usually it's just a convenient way of shaping food to form the centrpiece of a meal, whether it's made from meat or tofu or whatever; no animal resembles a rasher of bacon, or a burger, or a sausage or minced anything. Tofurkey is not ''sculpted into the shape of a turkey'' it is more like a roll of flavoured tofu wrapped around stuffing.
Many veg*ns survive quite well without fake meats; when I became a vegetarian in 1969 they didn't really exist - it was textured TVP or nothing. But I've started to eat some in the last few years; some are nice, some are not so good.
It's a matter of choice, and it doesn't compromise a veg*n's principles if they eat it. No big deal - why are you fretting about it?
I think that these products are mostly aimed at people who are newly veggie and don't know how to create a meal without meat, or for the parents of veggie teenagers who maybe don't want to produce 2 evening meals. On the whole these products are not very nice and you would be better served being a little more creative with raw ingredients. There is one other thing, which is that often convenience foods are meat based. it is much quicker to pop a veggie burger under the grill than to create a vegetarian meal from scratch, even if the end result would be much nicer.
Nah, I'd have to disagree. I think it is a bit daft but if you're choosing to not eat meat for ethical reasons, but miss the taste of it and find that soy substitutes help you adjust, then by all means eat them. You can love something but still choose against it because you believe it is not right. You could say it's just as ridiculous that we have a problem with obesity at all when anyone with half a head should be able to say 'that calorie, fat and sugar laden piece of food is completely unnecessary to my survival, therefore despite how utterly marvellous it tastes I will choose not to eat it.' We survived for millenia without chocolate - why do millions of people now have difficulty turning it (and it's chemical additives) down?

I really don't know man. I imagine somebody who is in transition into becoming a vegetarian may find comfort in using such products as these. Contrary to what Mike Hunt says. I think it looks like a turkey. Granted I'm not a vegetarian so I guess I'm not 100% sure of what makes them buy those things.
As a vegetarian, I don't miss the taste or the sight of meat. However, this is not a 'eat and let eat' society, unfortunately.
Vegetarians/vegans enjoy social gatherings as much as anyone else. You may be surprised at how rude others can be re: the contents on one's plate at a barbecue, a church breakfast or a fundraising luncheon.
Vegetarian menu items that look like those of meat lovers prevent discussions, arguments and insensitive verbal exchanges at such gatherings. I appreciate the availability of a garden pattie (I don't call them 'burgers') at such an outing. It lends discretion to avoid unwanted comments and ugly face-making from others who just don't understand that some people actually fully enjoy 'meatless' meals.
While I have never served a meal to monks or Hare Krishnas, I would have no problem constructing a healthy and delicious full 5 course menu for them. Most non-vegetarians find themselves a bit challenged to come up with main course items for vegetarians/vegans. It's made easier for them if they can simply shop in the vegetarian section of their supermarkets.
I cook across the spectrum. I make meat dishes as well as vegetarian/vegan ones. My tastes/preferences are my own and not necessarily shared by others. I don't comment on others' dietary/culinary preferences as food choices are truly personal choices and none of my business. I only want my guests to eat, drink, be merry and be respectful of one another. Eat and let eat!

I do not think it is stupid. Some vegetarians may like the taste of some meat. There are a variety of reasons to become a vegetarian (environment, health, cruelty to animals) and most of them do not say that they do not like the taste of meat, just the other stuff. I think I could survive without veggie burgers and such quite easily if I wanted to, but I do sometimes like the taste and convenience of it.
I agree.If you are a vegatarian it doesn't make sense to eat veggie burgers or bacon. If you are not eating meat than it doesn't make sense to eat something that has the same shape or texture as meat.I haven't eatn meat for almost 5 days now . I hope that this time I do not mess up and eat meat again.
I didn't stop eating meat because I didn't like the taste, it was because of how the animals were treated. So yes, I do still enjoy the fake stuff. But really, it doesn't taste like real meat, just similar. It's an acquired taste.
I could easily live without the substitutes, it's just convenient sometimes and they do provide protein and other nutrients so there is a bonus.
Also, people who are making the transition to a vegetarian lifestyle may find it helpful to adjust. Kind of like people who quit smoking and use a patch or nicotine gum.
Anything that helps people transition into a diet where they eat less meat is a good thing for the planet. And Michael's right- Tofurkey looks nothing like a turkey. It looks a bit like a football.
I think most vegetarians start out with the fake meat products, and then gradually phase them out when they figure out what to eat and how to cook it.

Yes, I actually agree with you. I've always thought that it's sort of stupid. I mean, it's basically saying that veggies are deprived if they must have fake meat. But it's reducing animal suffering, so I'm fine if people want to do that.
Well to put it to you this way.....I was a life long meat eater and only recently found out that i was allergic. It does not mean I dont enjoy meat, because believe I want nothing more than to eat a cheeseburger right now, but for health reason I CHOOSE not too. So I PREFER things that remind me of what i used to eat, things like burgers, tacos, BACON, etc.......
That's an interesting question. Most vegetarians make the switch for health reasons, environmental reasons, or out of concern for how animals are treated on factory farms. Very few people go vegetarian because they dislike the taste, texture, or look of meat. Why live on just salads when you can have pasta with veg meatballs, subs with Tofurkey deli slices, BLTs with soy bacon, etc? Also, the fake meats are usually very high in protein and other nutrients.
