So, are the products okay?!

Question: A while ago I sent an inquiry to Loblaws (a Canadian grocery company), asking if the mini brands they own test on animals. Today I recieved a reply. The most important part of it stated:

"Loblaw Companies/President's Choice does not undertake animal testing or order others/manufacturers to do such testing on our behalf unless it is necessary to meet our health, safety and environmental obligations, or government regulators require it. We are committed to the safety of our Control Brands products and to the safety and health of our consumers. Our Control Brand products undergo extensive testing and review by our Product Development and Quality Assurance teams to ensure their safety."

So...what does this mean? Does the Canadian government require Loblaws to test some of their products on animals?

If these products are safe, it will make buying soap, detergent, shampoo, and various other neccessities much easier and much cheaper. However, I still don't feel quite safe buying t

Companies often claim that their animal tests are required by law, even when this isn't the case. In the U.S., over 600 companies have completely stopped testing on animals.... but other companies still try to justify their cruel tests by vaguely referring to some "regulations". It appears that Loblaws does do animal testing, so I wouldn't buy their products (unless it's a brand like Kiss My Face that doesn't test on animals).

Check these sites for lists of cruelty-free companies:

Good luck.

yes they do!

"unless it is necessary to meet our health, safety and environmental obligations, or government regulators require it"

thats them saying, they are only testing sometimes!

there is no law in the USA that needs testing for animals! companies do it, so they do not get sued!

You are right about there being a possible loophole. They say, "No we don't... unless we have to". I think the way to get a straight answer out of them is to ask about *specific* products you are thinking of buying...they can't worm their way past that because either the shampoo/window cleaner/lotion is cruelty-free or it isn't. Email them back and let them know your concerns.

It depends what kind of products you are talking about. I think there are laws requiring testing for medicine and pharmeacuticals. But if they are cosmetics, house hold detergents or Mars candy etc. then there are animal friendly alternatives.

It generally means that they also produce some kind of medication, and are required to test it by law, but they do not test ingredients for other sorts of products.

I wouldn't purchase their products.
