Eggs are considered vegetarian in the U.S. because they're animal products, not animal flesh.

Although the eggs are unfertilized, modern-day egg production is (unfortunately) anything but humane:

Speaking from my point , eating an egg is eating an undeveloped chick. Thus, it is best to conclude that eggs are not to be eaten by vegetarians.

Ovo-vegetarians and Ovo-Lacto-Vegetarians do eat eggs. Lacto-vegetarians and vegans do not. I am vegan and don't believe in eating eggs. It is difficult to grantee the egg is not fertilized, it could be a little baby chick inside. Also most hens bread for their eggs end up dead or cooked. I still feel like its wrong. But every one is entitled to their opinion.

Which came first, chicken or the egg. I am with you. Enjoy those eggs.

I am veg and I eat eggs and milk products too, but some vegs doesnt. The vegs like me are cathegorized like "laktoovovegetarians" (lakto=milk, ovo=egg from the latin words), but there are also some veggies whos eating only the eggs or only the milk products, they are called laktovegetarians and ovovegetarians. Those who are not taking in ANY animal product are "vegans". There is also vegetarians who eat fishes and sea products (except seamammals) and others dont.

I consider egg as not a vegie...
if you ask me why? first of all... egg are come from chickens... and chicken is a producer of meat...
Although the majority of us are familiar with such terminology as egg whites, shells, and yolks, there are other egg related terminologies that we may not be as knowledgeable about. Egg is not a vegie and it was consider as a meat

hey ....no veggies in india still consider eating egg as non veg....so i dont think in my house thy wud allow having egg as vr veggies.....

.i dont think it is vegitarin. it might not have life, but a creature comes out of it after few days.so how is it that it has no life?

No,egg is not a non veg.It is veg because there is no blood or flesh of that animal.yes, veggies also like to eat egg,for eg. my friend Manush Patel.

Im a vegge not becoz of any religious reson but becoz of the slaughtering(not videos but live show) which I happened to see but I eat egg.In fact I love egg! Yet I think egg is non veg!
Bcoz technically it has more protein and fat contect like all other nonveg items!
Also life originate from egg.

Yes egg is non veg.

some of the answers are pretty shocking on the ignorance scale too

Commercial eggs are unfertilised and will never turn into a life, no matter what you do or how long you wait.

They can be described as "undeveloped chick" just as much as a womans menstral waste can be described as a baby.

Many veggies do choose thier supplier carefully though. Hens are just about the most abused of all farm animals.

Remember - layers are killed at about 10 months old, whereas thier natural life would be 10 years.

Eating eggs from a commercial source does support the death of millions of hens.

Just be aware of the facts when you buy them.

If you want to eat eggs, the most ethical way is to either keep your own hens or buy eggs from a hobby farm or small holding where they do not kill the hens as soon as production starts to drop.

vegetarians don't eat meat. Vegans don't eat dairy so it's vegetarian not vegan. I think it's more battery farms and all that as to why people don't eat eggs.

no, i am vegaterian and i eat eggs all the time, cheese and milk too!

an egg is chicken's menstration, it doesn't huet it to take it away, and unless fertalised it is not alive.

Milk, if a cow isn't milked it is in misery. so it is a relief for the cow to be milked, so again no harm.

i am trying to become a ovo lacto vegetarian and i am still in my teens. therefore i just recently made the decision to become vegetarian and later on in life i would like to progress into a full blown vegan. YAY! I am very proud of myself. By the way egg is a vegetarian. GOOD LUCK!

yes
