What do you think about this new Vegetarian Fast Food chain?!

Question: A restaurant just opened in NYC, and one is slated for Hollywood soon, called Zen Burger (menu here: http://www.zenburger.com/) that is a fast food joint that doesn't sell any meat products at all. I think it's great that they are opening up a new market for healthier meat-free food. However, it is still fast food, and I don't think it would be quite as nutritious as eating at home. And it's just as hard to find vegan food there as it is at the leading fast food chains.

What are your thoughts?

I think it is a great concept. There is probably a very big market for vegetarian fast food in places like NYC and Hollywood, a business catering to an untapped market is going to make large profits.

I like the idea of being able to choose to get vegetarian fast food if I want. While there are many vegetarians who prefer to make their own healthy foods(myself included), there are many people that enjoyed fast food as a meat eater and still look for it as a vegetarian.

I still have to wonder if they are going to make it. While the market is untapped and there are basically no competitors, this new business venture faces a lot of obstacles. They may be profitable in big cities(where there is a larger vegetarian population), there is little market in many states where people are big meat consumers. Weather vegetarian will even choose to eat fast food is a concern, there may be a lot of vegetarians in large cities, but will they buy enough fast food to keep the place in business. Many fast food purchasers eat fast food 3/4 times a week, I think many vegetarians are too health conscience to be eating fast food more than once in a blue moon.

It will be interesting to see if the place sticks around, and weather the open market will make up for the fact that most vegetarians do not eat fast food.

I think it's an incredible idea because it gives people the opportunity to choose a healthier lifestyle. America doesn't have to be dependent on meat anymore, but we chose too. I think it is only fair to offer that same choice across the board for vegetarians.

I think it is a good idea, even though I am a "meat eater" I would stop at a vegetarian fast food chain...as long as it is healthy. I usualy don't eat at regular fast food chains, but something different is always worth a try.

I think it's terrific. But NYC and Hollywood both have plenty of other vegetarian / vegan/ raw restaurants, cafes, and take-out/delivery joints. Now, if someone opened one on the Texas / Mexico border, I'd be impressed!

Regarding the nutrition aspect, no fast food is going to be really good for you- but then, you aren't supposed to eat it every day!

I've learned my lesson. Sugar free doesnt really mean you are going to lose weight. Fat Free doesnt really mean 0 calories. Vegetarian Fast Food doesn't really mean healthly. I bet they have as much calories and fat as any other fast food restaurant. Nothing beats eating at home.

It seem like it might be very expensive for fast food because of the limited amount of people who would go out of there way to eat there. Fast of slow meat or no, I prefer to prepare my own meals. Then I really know what I am paying for.

I just read the menu, and I would never eat there. It's a good idea, but I don't eat fake meat. If I'm going to eat a vegetarian meal, it will be falafel or black beans for my protein, not mystery faux meat.

thats great, I hope they do really well, so more places like that can open up, across all america! good for them!

Just because it's meat-free doesn't mean it's healthier. Make sure you know what they spray these vegetables with before you start going on about how healthy it is!

That said, this is a step in the right direction. But it still doesn't compare with buying your vegetables and fruit at a farmers' market, and knowing they have been organically produced.

I would still prefer to make my own vegetarian meals. Veggie restaurant meals - fast food or not - are still usually loaded with fat.

It's a good idea, though, for the people who WOULD want to eat there.

i dont eat things that try to imitate meat, so i dont like it.

heck yeah!

I wouldnt' buy stock in it ... strict vegetarians are cheap and odd. You might get a group of flexitarian vegetarians who tend to have normal spending habits. I'll bet their down the toilet within 2 years.
