Why do SOME non-vegetarians get so uptight about veggies being unhealthy?!

Question: Most meat eaters I know are overweight, feel lethargic and have a poop about once a week if they're lucky.

Answers: Most meat eaters I know are overweight, feel lethargic and have a poop about once a week if they're lucky.

In some cases, I think it's a case of the meat eater picturing a standard dinner plate and then mentally removing the chunk of meat and thinking "hey, that's not a balanced meal!"

It is hard for people with no concept of *other* ways of eating (for instance because they don't know any vegetarians), to understand what a vegetarian meal would consist of. Hence the common question "so what do you eat?", as if you are somehow limited if you don't eat meat, when in fact there are so many delicious meals from around the world that are naturally meat-free.

So if you picture yourself as a meat eater with no knowledge of vegetarian cooking, you may be better able to see where they are coming from. After all, if we ate nothing but potatoes/rice/pasta garnished with some lettuce leaves, we would quite quickly become malnourished!

(I do know some vegetarians who eat like this - usually replacing the meat with tons and tons of cheese - *not* healthy and yes, they are all overweight!)

Hmmm.

I eat meat and am fit, strong, healthy and regular.

I wonder how many olympic athletes are vegetarian? Is it the same as the general population I wonder?

Because they are narrow minded.

most vegetarians i meet are pushy with their beliefs like christians, all holier than thou with it.

i love meat, and poop regularly. and i sure as hell am not going to tell anyone else what to eat. i don't want to hear someone tell me what to eat.

It's because they don't understand how nutritious and healthy a vegetarian diet can be.
I ignore all put downs, I've long since stopped trying to justify my eating habits!

Heya

I dont know i agree that some meat eaters are over weight and tat veggies are thinner. However i am a veggie and every sinse i turned i am contonously ill.I have such a weakened immune system im going tot he doctors tommorow to check it out and see if there are any protein/iron stand ins i can take to stand in for the meat i lack. xxx

well my meat eating first grader can beat up your fifth grade vegetarian.

I too eat meat and am healthy and fit. My friend's wife is vegetarian and looks skinny and anaemic. She tried to get her husband to not eat meat either and he lasted about 2 weeks before passing out and ending up in hospital with an iron deficiency! I say eating meat is fine, but in moderation, just like anything really!

erm, excuse me, I am a meat eater and I am far from over weight, I am not lethargic and I poop regularly thank you!! I am not uptight about what any one else eats, if being veggie makes you happy then go for it, I really don't pay any heed to what anyone else is eating.

well why do MOST vegetarians get so uptight about meat bein unhealthy? the door swings both ways billy boy

Well, to be fair, most people are meat-eaters, and most people are obese and unhealthy, anyway. Just from that, you have a much, much higher chance of meeting someone obese and unhealthy - and if you ask them, chances are, they eat meat. Doesn't mean they're not healthy BECAUSE they eat meat - it could very well be the type/quality of the meat, or, most likely, that they just don't exercise enough. Especially when it comes to meat like beef, which can vary extremely in quality depending on where it comes from and the cut, and how it is prepared.

Counterpoint, why is it that most vegetarians I know are self-righteous beatnik snobs? I mean, especially since neither of those types are a majority; I've met way more (number-wise, not even ratio-wise) vegetarians/vegans who act superior to non-vegetarians, while I've met only a small handful of meat-eaters who are 'against', or even concern themselves with, vegetarians.

Most people who aren't classified as vegetarians are not carnivores.
We are omnivores, eating both meat and vegetables, where vegetarians are herbivores, restricting their diet to the consumption of plants.

There's some crap in the bible about how everyone should eat meat.

You'd need to ask the specific question to those "SOME" when you see them state it.

From what i've seen you just get personal slurs when you ask SOME meat-eaters to verify thier views in this forum, so I wouldn't bother if i were you.

I would point out there are some great contributors, both veggie and meat-eaters, just as there are some who prefer to slur rather than present and discuss properly..

Generalisations don't really help so i would say you should direct your question to the person who says veggies are unhealthy, rather than a generic question which can only result in more generalisations.

Good thing you said SOME because i think it is just a repsonse to SOME vegetarians who like to preach about the "superiority of their food choice. Like the ones who cannot end a sentence without the "I am vegetarian" line (I imagine they see a halo over their heads too), as if people really care. The ones who who bring it up at every oppurtunity almost demanding some sort of recognition (and medal?) for being one. These are the ones who get harrassedand i say deservedly so.. Mostly kids following the latest fad. Then then are the ones who are mature, not only about their food choices but all things in general. You don't don't hear them complaining about others because they get respect not ridicule.

Probably because they see a lot of so called vegetarians who seem to mainly exist on dairy and carbs without eating very much in the way of actual vegetables. I'm not saying that is the norm for vegetarians but I do know more than a few who fit this description. Also, some veggies do tend to regard themselves as being morally superior to non-veggies which causes a lot of defensiveness. Your stereotyped idea of most meat eaters being overweight, lethargic etc doesn't help either. At the end of the day eating or not eating meat is not what makes you healthy, it's about having a balanced diet.

...phew...some people are reaching boiling point...it's only a question!...anyway...i don't actually know why some 'meat eaters' say veggies are unhealthy...my mum thinks that all veggies are unhealthy but i disagree...veggies get their protein from dairy products. you've got the wrong idea on 'meat eaters' though...i eat meat and i am healthy and i'm actually underweight. i don't really count how many times i poop and as for lethargic, i don't even know what that means...hehe...

Because they are busy bodies and would rather criticize someone different from them than take a look at their own diet.

Why would you even post a question like this? You are obviously just looking for a reaction. Don't act so surprised at the responses.

yea i get it ALL the time. usually as they're eating a mcdonalds meal with fries and soda and coughing and sick. i don't get it.

because they dont know anything about human metabolism and nutricional needs, and they are sure that only that can be correct what they like

I've never heard of a non-vegetarian thinking veggies are unhealthy. I think you made that up.

I like my steaks rare.

Veggies are unhealthy?!!??? :-o
Noooo, tell me it's not so.

Mumm, I'm hungry. Think I'll go have a steak.
;-)

Just kidding, its all about balance people.

I'm 6'2" 185 lbs with 6% body weight. I eat meat all the time. I take a 'poop' once a day like most people. I run a 4.8 forty. Call that lethargic?

Yay thumbs down for being a healthy meat eater!!! Thanks guys! Just proving that veggies would throw the pope under the bus because he ate a steak. Almost stereotypical if you ask me. Bring on the thumbs down for giving my personal opinion! More power to you!
