ive been a vegetarian since i was like 5 or six when i found out slim jims were made of dead cow

I'm starting to do that right now (but i never ate fish..)---I'm 13...

I first went vegetarian at 14 but I know someone now with a daughter whose 6 and chooses not to eat meat. The girl just doesn't like it.

I started at age 12.
A friend of mine started at age 23 and another started at age 5!!!

As for the reason... well, when someone acutally explained to me that meat came from a dead animal, I was disgusted. Why would I want to eat a corpse? I don't eat road kill and I couldn't eat my dog... it just didn't/doesn't make sense to me.

Since then, I have done more reading on the ethics of it and started looking into nutrition and veganism. There's a lot of reasons people don't want to eat meat and the top three on my list are:
1/ Disgust
2/ Ethics
3/ Health

How old is your daughter? She may well be old enough to make this decision for herself and without parental support, her life will be difficult and I hate to say it, but she will grow to resent you - just as I grew to resent my parents for dismissing and belittling my decision.

There's a lot of nutritional, well balanced meals your daughter can eat. So as not to let this affect your entire family, perhaps you should give her some grocery money and encourage her to cook for herself. And perhaps have something vegetarian once a week that the whole family can enjoy.

It's insulting for you to insinuate that all veg*ns are well-to-do. A poor veg*n may live a life on lentils, tinned beans, rice and potatoes. These are hardly expensive foods.

The choice is not a "luxury". Don't be daft.

I was around 15..im 31 now and no we werent made of money it was just a lifestyle that I decided I wanted to live and my mom supported me in my decision..Its much easier now to be a vegetarian and believe it or not its even cheaper now than when I started 15 years ago. Just be understanding the more you listen and not judge the better you girl will be..If you say dont their gonna do it in the long run if they feel its whats right for them..the plus for me is I have never been over weight, Im a mom of 4 and most people think im still in my early 20's, Im very healthy... I feel i owe this to being a vegetarian - and Im not killing something to eat.

Were were too poor to have meat in the house, Heck meat is a luxury!

So I suppose I have always been a vegetarian.

I started at 17...I'm 37 now.

Meat is the "luxury". That's quite offensive to make it sound like vegetarians are elitest. And non-meat foods are "regular".

I've known people who have never had a bite of meat from the day they were born.

I've known people who started at 12 or 13 and then progressed as they aged and had more control.

I've known people who started at 15 or 16.

I've known people who started in their 40's.

And I've known PLENTY of "po' folk" who were vegetarian. And proud of it.

If "baby girl" is refusing to eat dead animals, then read up on it and help her out. Perhaps you'll increase your health as well by decreasing your animal intake!

9 years old.

From my experience, a vegetarian diet is cheaper than a meat-inclusive diet.

I'm pretty poor right now, two person household, recently college graduates, barely getting by (only one working, I'm going to nursing school). We're both vegetarian.

there isn't an age limit. some people raise their babies as vegetarian, and they grow up vegetarian all their lives.
if your kid doesn't like meat, then that should be fine. meat is not good for the body, anyway.
