If you just became a vegetarian/vegan...?!

Question: how much of a difference are you noticing in the price of your grocery shopping? Is it more or less?

Note: Please only answer if you just became one in the past few years please. The prices of food have gone up substantially so people who have been veggies for over 10 years really won't help my question get answered to my satisfaction.

Mine went up, but it could also be because I started shopping more at speciality grocery store and also buying more organic.

I am saving a lot of money now as a vegan. I don't buy the expensive meat substitutes very often, so that could be a factor.

Definately less
fruits are really low but meat is getting hire for some kinda recall or something

Dunno, would say it is about the same, maybe slightly less. Without the cost of meat can reduce the shopping bill. but the recent increase in prices in the UK, ie cost of bread, eggs and produce esp, can bring the total cost back up again.
Fish can be quite expensive too. You have to be careful about what you buy and think would that be better value than getting something else. Allot of vegetarians get so focused on buying everything fresh fresh fresh but u can get frozen vegetables and vegetable products that can have an equal nutritional value as fresh ones. They also keep for longer and can be cheaper. This can help in reducing your shopping bill quite a bit if you are careful. I have a friend whos also a vegetarian but insists on getting all fresh and organic stuff and she easily will spend £8-10 on one meal, while i can spend £15 on food for at least 5 days.

less, you can buy fruits and veggie in seasonal bulks and the beans and grians are really cheap!

To reduce costs, you can even buy the raw beans and soak them and slow cooker them yourself. that has saved me loads of money. -

you don't need to buy everything form a special store. most vegetarian foods are at your local large food stores.

cook more at home, that will save you loads of money, cause then you can make dinner and have the left overs for lunch the next day

get a few good cook book. I love veganomicon, its about $20.

It has actually increased alot because I am buying all organic produce. I think some people are able to do it and still stay within a budget. But in general the price of food overall has increased alot lately, so I don't think it is unique to new vegans to see a jump in their grocery bill.

I have been a veggie for about a year now.. however i have to buy meat for my husband and my step-son.. my weekly bill is about 100.. my husbands and step sons run about 150 a week.. However i try to make a lot of my stuff from scratch.. so i cut my food cost down by a LOT. Cuz i try not to buy anything Pre-packaged...

I've found it to be more expensive, but that's because I started eating vegetarian but my family stayed carnivore, so I found myself cooking separate entrees for myself and my family.

Lunches by myself are a lot cheaper, however.

Mine has gone up because I don't eat with my meat eating family, and my food is bought separately. I also buy mock meat which is more than actual meat. It really depends on what you'd like. I'm planning on cutting down on the mock meat to reduce the bill. If you're into mock meat, then your bill will rise depending on your personal lifestyle. Sorry if it was all jumbled...

I just recently became veggie and my grocery bill is about the same. I cook most everything from scratch and don't eat anything that has been processed.

Where you not a troll a few weeks back?

Have you joined the light side of the force then? Is it a matter of "if ya can't beat em' join em'?" :) We are much nicer on this side aren't we...

Welcome :)

(and I find it cheaper...especially since I started making all my own veggie burgers etc at home...but I have always preferred veggies and rice then almost anything else...)

It depends on what you buy, if you stick with just cutting out meat and not buying anything that substitutes meat your going to be spending less.
