How vegan/vegetarian-friendly is the area where you live?!

Question: I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and it's very veg. friendly here although I usually have to go to specialty stores to get ingredients. There are quite a bit of veg. restaurants around too, but not that many. How does your area compare?

I live about halfway between Milwaukee and Madison. The cities are where it's at for vegetarian dining, especially Madison being the huge college town that it is. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a city person and don't really like driving down there, so I tend to stick to my little area. There are plenty of health and natural foods stores, farmer's markets in the summer, and one all-organic market, which makes shopping pretty convenient. Restaurant choices are significantly less abundant. Perhaps not surprisingly, everyone here in the Dairy State loves cheese, which can make things difficult when eating out. Good thing I love Chinese, because that's about my choice.

I live in a meat madness state: Utah. I live about 30 miles north of Salt lake city. It has one proper vegetarian rest.

People here think, meat, meat, meat!

They do try different cultural foods, just many Mormons go to other parts of the world on misson. but different cultural does not mean not meat!

I think the worst states would be Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Seattle is very veg*n friendly. We have several vegetarian restaurants and some vegan ones as well. We have a vegan grocery (it's tiny, but they have a pretty impressive array of vegan goodies.) I can find most of the ingredients I need, even many of the more obscure ones, in the regular grocery stores. Plus we have Whole Foods and Trader Joes, many ethnic foods shops, and the Pike Place Market for fresh local produce and bulk spices.

HORRIBLE!!! i live in BBQ/Redneck central down here.. people look at me all kinds of weird when i ask for something without meat.. I WISH i had more friendly veg's around here.. but such is life.. and i just deal with it.. but honestly.. i wouldn't live anywhere else...

I live in Serbia, and the people cannot image what am I eating if I dont eat meat, they think that I am hungry all the time. Thanks God there are a lot of vegetable and soy products in the markets, and lately I noticed a few new bio shops, so the things are changing. I dont know a lot of vegetarians, but my friends, boyfriend and family supports me a lot. When I went to France, I felt like in vegetarian heaven lol...

Real America? Whatever. All of America is 'real'. Anyway, I'm in Portland, OR and we have TONS of choices. Pretty much every restaurant has veggie options. It's a foodie paradise!

I'm from Iowa originally (and a small town at that) and it was quite difficult 10 years ago... but now I live in San Diego aka veggie paradise!! You can get anything here and there's quite a few vegan restaurants...

I live in Kansas city, it is ok. It is a city founded on beef trading, but it is still a big city, and i think all big cities are probably ok for vegs these days. there are a couple exclusively veg restaurants and lots of veg friendly restaurants. We've got a couple of whole foods and a couple of wild oats as far as groceries, and some small specialty places as well. I'm sure san fran is better, but you could do worse.

where i live it's very vegetarian/vegan friendly there are some really good chinese and vietnamese vegan restaurants and an amazing store about 10 mins from where i live called follow your heart; its awesome.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada and it is pretty great...several restaurants, health food stores, loads of selections in little China as well as pretty much every restaurant has something to offer (for vegetarians anyway).

Compare to where I grew up, it is paradise...I can't go eat anywhere in my home town now that I am vegan

Not very friendly anywhere. That is why a flexatarian diet is so much better. You get all of the health benefits, without the awkward social situations.

The only problem I have is when I'm on duty. It's not that the ship is "unfriendly" ... its just that they are unable to accommodate "special" diets. But because I am a flexitarian vegetarian, I usually don't have any problem in finding enough vegetables and fruits to go along with seafood, fish and poultry. On those days when we have "red" meat, I simply don't have meat.

Places where my s/o and I have our homes and our vacation homes are very veggie friendly ... they don't care what anyone chooses to eat or not eat.

Since I usually try to avoid lots of replacements and things, it's not hard. Most regular grocery stores have a natural foods section, as well, for the times when I do want a mock meat or dairy. As far as restaurants, there's nothing veggie-specific around here. I got used to modifying regular meals years ago, and so I'm definitely not starving. :)

I'm in Michigan.

Sorry this city is REAL America....
There may be 11 restaurants... a Holiday market and one independent..
IF there is a V&V individual or family here ,,,K- sara- sara ..or is it say la vie
the county Moto is "where the west still lives"
San Francisco ( I was born at USC there) how sad that it is a sink hole of depravation now. Insane anarcists
