Disecting pig fetus on biology class?!

Question: Are these pigs killed just to experiment on them?

do you think it is cruel?

Answers: Are these pigs killed just to experiment on them?

do you think it is cruel?

My anatomy teacher recently brought this up. Pig fetuses come from pig claughthouses. When pigs are raised for meat, the females and males are not separated. This leads to pregancies which are discovered when the pig is butchered. The fetuses are collected and sold to companies that sell them for education. If there was not a market, they would still be dead because the mother would still be used for meat.

I personally do not think this is cruel. The pigs would have died anyways, and people may as well benefit from them. People are going to eat meat, so the ideal that some people strive for of completely eliminating slaughthouses just won't happen. Simulators are not the same. Its up to you to decide what you are comfortable with.

Yes they are and yes it is kinda cruel. But it's something you have to do and if the fetal pigs grew up, they'd only become bacon. It may make you feel better to know the animals used for dissection are ancient and it wouldn't surprise me to find out your fetal pig could be older than you. The formaldehyde really does a good job.

The pigs are a by-product of the industry but more than likely they were specially ordered just for your class to dissect. It's cruel to me and insanely unnecessary. If you object to this practice you can say you are morally against it and the school should understand.

Most of them are, and yes I do think it is cruel. Most teachers/professors will allow you to write a report or something in order to get out of dissecting if you have something against it.

Although, in most professional schools (that I have heard of) the animals are found dead or are sent to be dissected after their natural death. If anyone knows anything other than this, let me know... I'm going into veterinary medicine and will have to dissect dolphins, etc.!!!

I had a really hard time with is when I had to, I find it cruel and disgusting, and the teacher said after class "Those of you who were too immature to disect pigs will write an essay for me" and I was really insulted by that.

maybe they are, its no more or less cruel than any slaughter.

Amada asks for further information but doesn't have email enabled..thats frustrating....but in answer to your question its highly unlikley that animals "found" or that died of a natural death are used in disections.

unplanned deaths on farms have to be reported as "sudden deaths". This requires the animals are left in place in the field or shed until an Anthrax test is carried out and cleared. At this point the animal is likely to be about 1 day old and unhygienic for any use - they are taken to incinerators and burnt seperate to other animals.

No farm would be allowed to ship an animal than had an unexplained death off to school, even via some processng and cleaning plant
