"Why do vegetarians never tell you that soy is a recognized cause of cancer?"?!

Question: Hmm, maybe this is why? From the very same journal that was suggested by the person who originally posted the question. By the way, I do NOT claim that soy prevents cancer. All I'm suggesting is to be less reactionary in your attitudes - you know who you are. There is a lot we don't know about cancer.

"The results from our studies suggest that further clinical investigation should be warranted to apply soy phytochemicals, such as SPC, as a potent prevention regimen for bladder cancer progression"

Or how about this:
International Journal of Toxicology Volume: 25 Issue: 3 Pages: 219-228
"Epidemiologic data suggest that soy consumption may protect against cancer induction in several tissues in humans."

Or this:
"Inhibition of Murine Bladder Tumorigenesis by Soy Isoflavones via Alterations in the Cell Cycle, Apoptosis, and Angiogenesis"

I remember the question you refer to. The questioner gave one link, and it was to details of an inconclusive study into soy as a possible risk factor for bladder cancer.

She was quite unable to back up her claim with anything else, and told me I should go and google it.

People who have never had cancer are often inclined to make wild claims about what causes it; they are never able to back up their claims, which just reflect their own prejudices.

It is a whole lot easier, and much less frightening, for someone who hasn't had cancer to 'blame the victim' - that is to put cancer down to bad lifestyle and dietary choices - than it is for them to accept that cancer is a cruel and random disease that can strike any of us at any time.

As a vegan who's had cancer, I'm a little tired of seeing it used as a weapon or as a propaganda tool (from either side).

The facts of the matter are these: there is no food that has been scientifically proven to cause, prevent, treat or cure cancer. NO FOOD - not soy, not meat, not dairy.

Eat or avoid whatever food you choose - but don't rely on your choices to prevent cancer.

PS: FlexiVegan, please provide links to at least some of the 'much' recent research that has 'proved' that soy causes cancer. Thank you.

hmmmm (O-O) well I am a two year vegetarian and I had no idea that soy caused cancer ! thanks for informing me. I will have to read those articles before you I give you a proper answer, but to back up the veggies, there are alot of meats that cause cancer as well.

Red meat causes colon cancer fyi and with the cases of Mad cow disease and bird flue, I think it is better to be a veggie than to take the risk of eating the meat ! Another point, is that we have no idea what the are putting in the meat -- or for any food as a matter of fact -- so we can get any disease from simply eating.

You do raise a good point though and I'm glad that you brought it up, because I had no idea that soy was considered a carcinogen thx

"Why do vegetarians never tell you that soy is a recognized cause of cancer?"

For the same reason that meat eaters never tell you that animal products (meat & dairy) are a proven cause of cancer.

I don’t eat soy because I don’t like the taste and I am concerned about the cancer link factor. However, I assume that most people are already aware of this issue, so I don’t feel the need to tell them about it.

.

If you eat soy you are not going to get cancer from that alone. Your body is already made up genetically to get cancer or not. There are many things a person can do to help themselves to not develop any type of cancer. However, cigarettes cause cancer but people smoke every day for 40 years and never get any type of cancer. I don't smoke, but that is just an example. I would not stop eating soy because of this study. Just about everything today can cause cancer according to someone.

Sorry misread

Maybe we should dumb it down for ME!

Actually, to "dumb" it down. It's not the meat or the soy that causes cancer but the crap that comes along with both.

I can guarantee that fresh soy beans or fresh deer will NEVER cause cancer. It is the ones that go through processing that provide us with our wonderful cancer causing agents.

I can understand a strict vegetarian or vegan who doesn't care to consume soy. I find it laughable when someone who eats gobs of meat, and especially hormone-laden dairy tries to tell me soy is bad. I also find it interesting that many of those people who spout the soy "facts" also don't realize they don't have to be vegetarian to be consuming soy; and that most of them consume a lot of it daily.

That said, I go with my own body's reaction. I don't feel as good as I usually do when I eat soy, so I usually don't.

Soy is a killer in sheeps clothing. It was never meant to be a main food. The asian cultures use it as a condiment. It's only foolish western strict vegetarians and strict vegans who eat mountains of this stuff and are in line for cancer.

Much recent research has proved this. BEWARE of soy. Not to mention the development of breasts in males and the danger of male breast cancer.

Many of those studies in those links are funded by the soy lobby. Of course they don't want you to think that soy causes cancer or that the causes of cancer is mysterious and unknown!

Everything on earth pretty much has been link to cancer. And soy is one of those things like air that can cause cancer to some people but it is rare, millions more people get cancer from animal products such as meat and dairy. Soy is not a recognized cause for cancer it is a by side cause. And why only vegetarians? There is all sorts wrong with your question.

Soy is more known for preventing cancer than causing it, learn your facts, and research, read The China Study as well.
