Vegetarian+ swimming+cramp?!

Question: I am a vegetarian

I do a-lot of swimming ( lifesaving to be precise, which you can see in my pic).

I often get very bad cramp after swimming for a while- this is not normal.

Someone suggested it could be a diet problem

has anyone else had this issue ? if so which bit of the diet am I missing?

I love swimming and I don't think it is diet that is causing it unless your diet is really deficient.

I did find a swimming forum online, and many people there are saying you need more sodium in your diet if you're cramping up, and perhaps potassium as well:

Are you stretching before you swim?

Also keep hydrated, even though you're in water yourself, you need to keep drinking. And make room for meals, of course.

not diet but can be to do with eating before you swim, best to rest for 2 hours after eating

Sounds to me like it could be lack of stretching before and after swimming or eating to much before going into the water.

It may be you're low on potassium. Also, you sweat when you swim as much as when you run-you just don't notice the sweat when your're in the water.

Eat bananas and stay hydrated when you swim-maybe eat a slightly salty snack, like salted almonds, to keep your electrolites up.

Leg cramps? Stomach cramps? Like any person you need a balance of foods and vitamins. Stomach cramps I'm told are caused because your blood is busy digesting food. I am not a vegetarian and I get leg cramps from lack of minerals.

It could be that you aren't getting enough Potassium (vit K) that is easily upped by eating 1banana a day and eating more legumes. Try the MyPryamid.gov site although not specifically vegetarian it is a great resource for food values and amounts needed for good overall health. Good Luck!

I always thought cramps were caused by dehydration. Where do you cramp?

Foot & Calf is dehydration......I get it when I sleep sometimes.
