My 11 year old daughter has just become vegan.does she need to take a multi-vitamin?what else is necessary?!

Question: how should she get he protein and necessary vitamins ?

Answers: how should she get he protein and necessary vitamins ?

Insist to her that she is too young to become a vegan, and her body is in that crucial stage where she will be hitting puberty pretty soon and will need all the nutrition she can get. Vegetarianism may be ok-but certainly not veganism @ 11 y.o.-and supplements just dont cut it at that age. If she refuses take her to the family doctor and let him/her explain to her the risks involved and that she can have many negative side affects or stunt her development.(particulary her bones) Anyways shes young and has the rest of her life to pursue veganism. If all else fails tempt her with a bowl of yummy ice cream and it should do the trick lol

She is very young and is still growing so you really want to make sure she is getting enough nutrients.
Vegan is even more strict than vegetarian and it won't be easy... I would honestly go straight to a nutritionist about this to give you a program adapted specifically to her.

I very much agree with the first comment. Go to a nutritionist to talk about some kind of plan. I really think that's kind of young to make that kind of choice of lifestyle. She still has a lot of growing to do, and not eating correctly could have unfortunate consequences in the future. Good Luck.

she should eat nuts for protein :)

That is awesome and very mature of her! The article below talks about vegan nutrition:

And if she eats all the foods that gives her the nutrients she needs she should not need to take any multivitamins. Above talks about protein as well as the other nutrient she needs. So just make sure that she gets all the nutrients she needs from the foods above! Since she is young and growing, it is a far healthier choice for her to get her nutrients from plant sources instead of animal sources.

it probably won't last long when i tried i was eating meat the very next day.

It's a good idea for young women to take a multi-vitamin, whether they're omnivorous or vegetarian. The main thing for vegans is getting a reliable source of vitamin B12 by either taking a supplement or eating fortified foods (such as cereals and soymilks).

Here's a list of vegan foods that are high in protein, iron, and calcium: http://www.tryveg.com/cfi/toc/?v=08sourc...

General info on vegan nutrition:

The American Dietetic Association (one of the nation's leading nutrition experts) states: "Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence." It's not necessary to see a dietician, but it can be very reassuring and helpful.

Thanks for being supportive of your daughter.

Not if she eats right. She can get protein from seeds, nuts, grains, and legumes.

Vitamins she can get from many different sources, mostly fruits and vegetables.

she needs to subsatute her meats with other proten filled foods like beans and nuts. also vitamins for the lack of calcium

she definitely needs vitamins. vegetables alone don't provide enough especially protein. check out foods from soy. soy is high in protein.

try having her be a vegetarian first... they can still eat butter, etc. that give them fat&&stuff they need.... being vegan is wayyy strict... and yeesssss she definitely needs a multivitamin. even if youre not veggie/vegan you should still take one because not many people get all the vitamins they need.

Just a note. Anemia and other nutrient deficiencies have been linked to lack of vitamin C, not necessarily lack of meat. Milk has virtually no iron and eggs only a moderate amount, so veganism is actually better than vegetarianism in terms of iron intake. The extra fruits/veggies that vegans eat compensates for the iron because vit C increases iron uptake.

Yes, she will need to take multi-vitamins at the very least. What else is necessary? A mom ... she needs a mom who is willing to be "MOM" and not let an 11 yo make decisions that will effect her health. Instead of doing this on the cheap and listening to the airheads on V&V ... spend a few bucks and take your child to a medical professional. And you should go to parenting classes.
