Vegetarians - how do you react if you find meat in the meal you're eating?!

Question: I once found out the soup I was eating had beef in the broth and had a fit and made myself throw up. Looking back, I should've been more calm about it and just moved on without the soup. I've learned to be more careful and ask for ingredients without assuming vegetable soup is 100% vegetarian.

Has anything like this happened to you and how did you respond?

I know EXACTLY how you feel.
Being a self-proclaimed vegetarian for nearly eleven years, since the age of five (the rest of my family eat meat) I have tried to be very concious of what has meat products. For a while I used to check the ingredients on products my parents use to cook meals.
Recently, my family went to dinner at a Chinese resturant, and after being very dissapointed with the lack of non-meat items on the menu, I ordered vegetable spring rolls. When i got them, they were beef spring rolls, and without knowing this I bit into the spring roll, and discovering it was beef, spit it out and ended up crying. I find it very disrespectful when a resturant isn't careful about such things.

If i eat it then i'll just become a omnivore..... x

I ordered a slice of just cheese and tomato pizza and found meat underneath the cheese, don't think I actually ate any meat but I was just relieved I hadn't eaten the meat and just decided to leave my lunch but my mate took it back and complained. I was just embarressed though. It was just an accident, so I didn't want to make a big deal, even though I was a little annoyed, no one had malicious intent to make me eat meat.

Found a chunk of meat mixed in with the tofu in my noodle dish. Quit eating, sent it back and got a refund. I dont eat there any more

lol i would do what you did, throw it up. anyway i think i would be sick regardless of wether i knew or not, cause i havnt eaten meat for so long it would make me sick.

my friend is a vegetarian and we were out and there was some fish in her salad and she just started retchin loads...she felt so sick. i don't think she did it on purpose it was just a reflex...eating meat makes her feel physically sick.i think it's disgusting that restaurants aren't as bothered about people who don't eat meat and when you complain they treat u like dirt. would they do the same if someone with a nut allergy found nuts in her meal?!

I'm not a conscience veggie, so I just remove the meat if I find myself in that situation - I do have a natural aversion to the taste and texture of meat, so would find it very difficult to swallow!. I just avoid annything that might be suspect - I do eat cheese - so if all else fails, cheese on toast is a good standby!!

Not to my knowledge but then if I eat out I only ever eat things marked 'suitable for veggies' most decent restaurants have their dishes marked or a veggie menu. I must say though if it ever happened to me I would create a real scene I would be so angry! If it clearly said veggie on the menu I'd sue them too!

Once I was eating in a Japanese restaurant and accidently ate some meat that was in the sushi. I thought my "vegetarian roll" tasted a bit funny, and then I found out there was squid in it. I didn't throw up or anything, but I was quite disgusted for awhile and annoyed that the servers didn't identify the different types of sushi for us when they brought it out.

I have always been suspicious of foods in restaurants, though, ever since I became veggie. You're right, it is always a good idea to make sure the food they bring you has no meat products.

when i order food i always ask if it has meat in it....even if the menu description of the meal doesnt include meat you never know.

a few years a go i ordered a simple pasta with red sauce telling the waiter no meatballs or meat. when i tasted the food i instantly knew there was meat....it was dark in the restaurant and i didnt expect there to be any meat in it...i kinda freaked out, i was about to cry b/c i became a veg. for a reason and that was not to eat meat. i was thinking about throwing up but i decided not to b/c my friends were spending the night and i hate throwing up. i sent it back and just got a salad. i dont think i yelled at the waiter, b/c it wasn't his fault it was mine...i should have asked about the sauce

now im very cautious but it can still happen. if it ever does, i dont eat the meal and i get kinda shocked so i dont scream or anything

but they usually make soup out of chicken stock or other meat stocks...the waiters are usually kinda clueless about what the chef really puts in the dishes.

too many times this has happened to me. i was at a restaurant and ordered a bean burrito and they brought me a beef burrito. i took one bite of the burrito and spit it up and was very concerned with the waiter and i demanded a refund. i also was eating at my house. it was a casserole with chicken and i was extremely agitated with them. so yeah it basically makes me sick and very angered.

Years ago a vegitarian friend of mine was served a bowl of Ox tail soup instead of the miso she ordered. Of course, both being a brown consume type broth (and being in a dimly lit restaurant) she didn't know until she tasted it.

She was pretty grossed out, I mean, bad enough it was meat broth, but Ox tail? Luckily she's a calm sort, it's not like she ate it on purpose. She sent it back and got her miso on the house. The waiter was very embarassed, needless to say.

I just stop eating it. No big deal.

happened to me - i mean, most restaurants have meat right - and it didnt exactly say - 30%beef on the menu, so when i found out, i took out the meats and ate the noodle (because i ordered it and my parents were paying for it - and i felt horrible)
i never ate from a restaurant without asking the waiter whether it had meat or not again.
this was a long time ago and i was just 'going veg.' at the time.

Once at a mexican restaurant my sister and I ordered two vegetarian dishes. It turned out it was vegetarian except the PORK beans they put in with it.

So my sister kept vomiting in their bathroom.
The sad thing was that they wouldn't give us a full refund because they didn't seem how a vegetarian eating meat was a bad thing.

So we never went back obviously.

I don't really mind that much, I don't eat meat because I hate the taste and texture of it. When I was on an airplane last I specifically ordered vegetarian meals, but I was given pasta with bits of chicken in it , so I could just pick those off.

If I ordered something in a restaurant and it had meat in it, I would be pretty annoyed and definitely send it back

Stop playing with your food. Just wolf it down like the omnivorous beast you know you are.
