Vegan/Vegetarian Parents?!?!?!

Question: I need your help or answer on this. I'm 18 and have been a vegetarian [i eat no meat and only dairy is cheese and icecream] for 8 years and since I 1st became one decided to raise my kids the same way. Ok so here's the question.

When you send your kids to school knowing they serve meat don't you worry about your kids being given meat or fed meat or whatever?

I'm worried that when my kid that I have goes to school that they will be given meat and fed it. Another kid might give it toehm or a teacher could or whatever.

Hopefully you get my question I'm blonde and really suck at explaining stuff. =/

oh and no i do not have a kid yet this is jsut for future reference or whatever.

Thanks! =]

When you say I dont eat meat and only dairy products of cheese and ice cream it confuses me so, do you eat fish or eggs also??

I think if you should give you child a packed lunch in a bag not a school meal thats what most people with vegetarian kids do, And if you want to just explain to you're child's teacher how you're child is a vegan or vegetarian and you do not want him/her to be fed animal products :-) and she shall take care
of that. my little sister is 6 and she is a lacto vegetarian ( no meat, fish or eggs ) my mom raised her and me up as one and what my mom did was pack her lunch every day and she also went in to her teacher and explained how my little sister has been a vegetarian all her life, so the teacher makes sure the cafeteria lady's watch that the other kids dont let her try the burgers and stuff.

hope this helped x

i think you should let your kids decide when they get orlder but if you don't let the school know and pack them vegetarian meals

Many parents and kids are vegetarian now. Explain to your kids why you are not eating meats, the side effect of not vegetarian and vegetarian.

here is what you do:

1) You find out what vegetarian society there is around you.
2) You contact them, and find other vegetarian parents in your area,
3) you ask them how they are approaching this topic
4) You ask the school you child will go to, about their policies and general way of doing things. - ask them how they ensure healthy eating for your kids - at this point do not make this into a vegetarian issue about just general healthy eating
5) You then send your child with lunch from home -
6) you send tell the teach know that your child does ont have meat in their diet. - (same as if they were allergy to peanuts)!

7) at home you teach your child the values you have - like if you would for anything else. - religion, education etc..

8) there will be times when it will be hard, - but thats when you seek support from your local vegetarian community!

- good luck you will be a great mommy.

I was rasied as a vegetarian (grew up in UK), and I am vegan now. One day when i have kids I want them to be vegetarian.

Give them their own food, and tell them not to eat anything from school, because it's really bad, which is true.

Let the school know that you, and your children, are vegetarian. You will need to give them a list (in writing) at the beginning of each school year, of what your child can and cannot have. Because of food allergies, teachers of young children are used to these restrictions and deal with them well. You will just need to provide a lunch and snack.

Before starting school, you might want to take your child to a petting zoo, and introduce them to a pig, chicken and cow. Then explain that is where bacon, nuggets and hamburgers come from. Many children instinctively reject meat at this point.

In response to a comment below: Propaganda? You're saying hamburgers don't come from cows? Did you REALLY believe in the "hamburger tree" from McDonald's?

And spell check is a fabulous invention.

School lunches are terrible for kids anyway, just send them with their lunch. I too am trying to have a child, and being a vegetarian for 17 years I often worry about what the child will end up eating, but ultimately it will have to be their choice.

Well you could just pack their lunch. School unches are horrible any way i totaly refuse to eat them, i would rather eat my hand!

Can't relate on the whole blonde thing, but i get told all the time that i am so dumb i am a insult to all brunettes

When you register your child for preschool you fill out many forms one of them has a space that you fill out if your kid has any allergies or special dietary needs. You can also speak to them in person (the teachers) and make it very clear that your child is a vegetarian and exactly what that means just to be sure.

As far as elementary school goes I pack my kids their lunches simply because the foods that they serve are in my opinion crap.

give your children(when you have them) the right to choose..school meals arnt all that bad and just cuz u dont want them to eat meat doesnt mean they dont want to..im not being mean but not giving them the oppurtunity to make a decision by themselves is wrong...your children (when you have them) have a right to make up their own decision on the topic without being influenced by others....you would feel more proud if they decided to go vegtarian even after having meat..that shows there indepence in thinking for themselves...i certainly would be proud when i have kids if the go vegetarian after eating meat for their own reasons rather than sum1 else pressuring them...trust me when u have kids they will respect you in later life if u gave them the choice to make for themselves rather than give them no choice. and Jen D ur suggesting propaganda..i cant beleive that ur suggesting this..wudnt you get mad if meat eaters told their kids veg is yucky and comes from dead plants so they didnt eat veg...no u wud be furious...and the guys future kids arnt vegetarian they made no choice...a choice is being made for them...just as meat eaters make a choice that a pig when it is born will become bacon...u have a problem with this but dont have a problem with giving your own children a choice???

i just dont see why u cant let them try meat at school...they are not allergic to it..so likening meat to allergies is nonsense...arent we supposed to show our kids all aspects of life and make them make their own minds up about things...sheltering them from somethings is not the way to do it...im not being mean but if a parent said they dont want their child to eat veg as he gets everything from meat and supplements u wud call the parents crazy..i just dont see how u can force ur own beleifs on a child...they are not u...they are a different human being. deal with it.

You shouldn't be worrying about it, let your kids decide what they want for lunch. I hope they eat meat when they grow up, just to show you that you cannot be in control of them for the rest of their lives.
