Eating fish (fish abuse)?!
Answers: Does anyone have any information or know anything about if fish are abused in their capture? I have seen a video on how mammals are abused in their "preparation" for human consumption. Is this same kind of abuse prevalent in the fish industry? I had 2 fish sandwhiches today at McDonald's instead of meat and now I am wondering if the fish are abused as well. Please help, thank you.
Fish are animals. Animals = meat. Therefore, fish = meat.

You are not a regular guy. If you are so concerned about the way animals are abused you should hunt, slaughter, and prepare your own food.
A Dead fish is meat.
The links given to you by the first answerer are great.
But, know on top of that that fishing gear kills thousands of whales, dolphins, turtles, manatees, sea birds, seals, and sea lions a year.
And, in numerous types of fishing, as much as 50% of the fish that are caught are thrown back because they are not the correct kind. Thrown back dead, that is.
I can't imagine that suffocating or being gutted alive is a good way to go.
follow your heart... If you feel in the pit of your gut that the animal (Fish) is being hurt. It IS... I just read those posting about farm raised fish. I WILL NOT BUY ANYMORE .. I use to only eat farm rasied fish . Nothing else MEAT ECT. Thinking it was less harmful ..Was I wrong ... Just listen to your gut.. Thanks .. for the question.. I would have never looked up the links given about farmed fish .. Was a Pescatarian/Farm rasied only.. Now I really think vegan is the right way < For me> ... ;)
I think it's cool that you are concerned with the environment and your impact on it! Overall, the main reason that it is bad to consume commercial fish is the huge, ominous overfishing the seas flag. Humans are depleting the seas of their natural inhabitants, including whales, fish (tuna!), turtles, sharks, and many other creatures because fishermen can't control what accidentally swims into their nets. If there just so happens to be a dolphin or a turtle in the boat, they may leave it for a while, or throw it back improperly, or just the anxiety and stress of the whole ordeal can kill the animal. We really need to take initiative to stop over fishing the seas. Humans are greedy, and we don't think about the consequences of our actions, especially against the environment and the oceans. If we continue down the same path, we will have killed every single living creature on this planet because of our greediness. So overall, yes, fish really do destroy the environment, and thank you for actually caring about the consequences of your actions. Now it is up to you to decide what to do with your new information.
Emilio - Real men are kind to animals.
Regular guy - Fish have absolutely no legal protection from cruel treatment in the U.S. or in Canada. They're abused in ways that would result in felony cruelty-to-animals charges if cats or dogs were the victims.
"Fish slaughter plants in the U.S. make no effort to stun the fish, who are fully conscious when they start down the slaughter line. Their gills are cut, and they are left to bleed to death, convulsing in pain. Large fish, such as salmon, are sometimes bashed on the head with a wooden bat called a 'priest,' and many are seriously injured but still alive and suffering when they are cut open. Smaller fish, like trout, are often killed by simply draining water away and leaving them to slowly suffocate or by packing them in ice while they are still fully conscious. Because fish are cold-blooded, allowing them to suffocate on ice prolongs their suffering, leaving them to experience excruciating pain for as long as 15 minutes before they die."
If it's any indication of how brutal the fishing industry is, a friend of mine went vegetarian after working on a commercial fishing boat. Good for you for looking into these issues.
