Is soya milk high in protein?!


Question: Hi

I've just bought some soya milk.

It has 8.3g protein per 250ml serving. (a glass)

Is that alot? And is it good to include cows milk, soya milk and dairy in my diet?

Soy milk is nutritionally close to cow's milk, though most soy milk commercially available today is enriched with added vitamins such as vitamin B12. It naturally has about the same amount of protein (but not the same proteins) as cow milk. Natural soy milk contains little digestible calcium as it is bound to the bean's pulp, which is insoluble in a human. To counter this, many manufacturers enrich their products with calcium carbonate available to human digestion. Unlike cow's milk it has little saturated fat and no cholesterol, which many consider to be a benefit. Soy products contain sucrose as the basic disaccharide, which breaks down into glucose and fructose.

Soy milk is promoted as a healthy alternative to cow's milk for reasons including:
*Source of lecithin and vitamin E
*Lacks casein
*It is safe for people with lactose intolerance or milk allergy
*Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are good for the heart.
*Contains isoflavones, organic chemicals that may possibly be beneficial to health.

im not entirely sure in mls but are u vegan or vegtarian...if you are a vegetarian i know a website where i get my protein to work out its www.myprotein.co.uk and look at whey protein isolate NZ this has over 27g protein per 30 grams and u can mix this with soy milk and u can get all the protein u need..the average man only need approx 50g of protein and this can be taken care of in a single shake.

I eat meat but while im dieting i find it far more efficient to get my protein in this form rather than meat and it has less calories.

guess it shows u dont have to eat meat but i dont think il give it up..its part of my life...but besides i cant actually remember the last time i had meat...lol iv been on these shakes and salads for the last 2 months lol

That is high is protein yes. 8 grams of protein is about 1/7 of your daily recommended intake. If you ate no other food you could still get all your protein if you drank 7 small (250ml) cups of soymilk.

A variety is always good. Don't forget eggs as well. We need amino acids, not all of which is available in soya.

How much protein do we need? The RDA recommends that we take in 0.8 grams of protein for every kilogram that we weigh (or about 0.36 grams of protein per pound that we weigh) 1. This recommendation includes a generous safety factor for most people. When we make a few adjustments to account for some plant proteins being digested somewhat differently from animal proteins and for the amino acid mix in some plant proteins, we arrive at a level of 1 gram of protein per kilogram body weight (0.45 grams of protein per pound that we weigh). Since vegans eat a variety of plant protein sources, somewhere between 0.8 and 1 gram of protein per kilogram would be a protein recommendation for vegans. If we do a few calculations we see that the protein recommendation for vegans amounts to close to 10% of calories coming from protein. [For example, a 79 kg vegan male aged 25 to 50 years could have an estimated calorie requirement of 2900 calories per day. His protein needs might be as high as 79 kg x 1 gram/kg = 79 grams of protein. 79 grams of protein x 4 calories/gram of protein = 316 calories from protein per day. 316 calories from protein divided by 2900 calories = 10.1% of calories from protein.] If we look at what vegans are eating, we find that between 10-12% of calories come from protein 3. This contrasts with the protein intake of non-vegetarians, which is close to 14-18% of calories.
