You can gain weight on any kind of diet. In fact, many inexperienced vegetarians gain weight when they first start out because the lack of meat makes them feel less satisfied after eating; less satisfied people snack more, leading to unwanted weight gain.

If you need to gain weight, you can do so healthilly on a vegetarian diet. Eating salads with olives, cheese, nuts, and olive oil dressing is a great way to get the vitamins, fiber, and fat that you need.

Peanut butter and other nut products are highly caloric, so peanut butter sandwiches and trail mix will probably turn into your best friends. Avocados are another vegetable product that vegetarians use as a fat source.

Starches and carbs can help you gain weight as well. Potatoes (any style) are dense in calories, as are rice, bread, and pasta.

If you're planning to become ovo-lacto (egg and milk eating vegetarian) you retain the valuable nutrition sources of milk, cheese, yogurt, and eggs.

These are just some general ideas; if you're going to become a vegetarian, you need to plan a diet that works for you, preferably with the guidance of your doctor.

You can gain weight being any thing. It depends on how you eat, not whether you're eating meat or not.

Yes there are vegetarians who eat junk food! Seriously if you keep your protein and carbyhydrate levels up you should'nt lose any weight.

you can gain or lose weight no matter what you eat
it just depends on the amounts

Yes, you can. It all depends on how many calories and fat you consume.

Of course! You can eat more of everything. Although you're cutting out meats, nuts and seeds have a high fat content, and if you're veggie then cheese and general dairy is in as well. A veggie book I read suggested that if you want to put on weight, eat a small, yet still balanced extra meal in the evening, afetr your main dinner.

yes you can gain more weight as a vegetarian, just because food has no meat products doesnt mean it's not fattening. if you want to gain healthy weight try eating 4-6 small healthy meals a day emphasizing fresh fruits, nuts, grains , beans, lentils, peas, lettuces , avocados, tomatoes, and lots of vegie juice such as carrot or wheat grass , stay away from starchy pasta or anything made with proccessed flour or sugars, drink lots of green tea.

Yes it's possible. Just gotta eat the right foods. Because you are no longer eating meats, you are losing out on the protein and fats are plentiful in meats. To replace that, you need foods such as nuts, that are high in fats and protein. Eating salads with lots of dressing is also bound to give results. And because you will be getting less protein, you will probably have a bigger appetite so eat more in quantity as well.

gaining weight can have to do with ANYTHING last time i checked you could still be a vegetarian and eat candy chocolate and sugar so yes you can gain weight for whatever reason?

Ya there are some but veg. don't eat greasy meat which is a plus. But every1's matabolism is different. If you eat healthy and exercise 30 min a day I seriously doubt that you'll be overweight. ;)

Absolutely. You can gain weight as a vegan as well. By not measuring servings of high carb and fatty food you get too many nutrients and they turn into fat. You have to measure your servings and go by the vegetarian food pyramid.

Also as a general rule: A fourth of a cup of grain, beans, or nuts = 1 serving.

sweet potatoes ,

It really depends on what you eat. If you give up meats and choose potato chips and ice cream instead, well, yeah you're going to gain weight. Meat will fill you up more than other foods so you may compensate by eating more food that is "bad" or unhealthy for you. You might find that you have to eat more than you used to in order to stay full. You'll also have to take vitamins to recieve the nutrients you won't be getting from meats. Personally, every vegatarian I've known has gained weight.

Good luck!

If you are still pigging out on pastries, overeating just about ANYTHING and not exercising, you will gain weight. Being fat has as much to do with activity level as diet. It does not matter if you cut all animal products out of your diet entirely. If you do not exercise, you gain weight, and not the good kind. Try weight lifting and put on some muscle weight. It may take a long time, but it will be well worth the effort.

yes it is if you consume all carbs such as potatoes, pasta and bread

ive been a vegetarian for 1 year and im still at it this year^^
yes,it does make you gain weight.because vegetables may be healthy but to much can make you a bit thicker.depending wen and how much you eat.if you dont eat breakfast and you wait till lunch or dinner youll eat a lot more....and your stomach wont have time to digest it all.

I gained wait after I became a vegetarian. The reason was meat was blocking my arteries.. that was discovered after I became vegetarian. Before when I was a meat eater doctors were puzzled why I couldn't gain weight. I became vegetarian because meat got too expensive. I don't think a pkg of 8 weiners is worth $2.48
I remain vegetarian being is healthiest for me!
Vegetarians don't missout on protein if they eat enough dark greens. Vegetarian protein is healther than meat protein is Vegetarian protein isn't recycled. Meat protein is dead protein!

If you eat more calories than you burn.

Yes, it is possible to gain weight and I know quite a few overweight vegetarians.

Quite frankly, these overweight vegetarians follow very unhealthy ways of eating, so it is hardly surprising.

They eat no or a minimal intake of filtered water, fresh fruit & vegetables, nuts & seeds.

They eat lots of junk foods & fatty foods, such as, processed cheese, white pasta, white bread, processed foods and lots of fizzy cola, chips and sweeties.

If you need to bulk up, I suggest following a healthy vegetarian diet and doing some daily weight training - get inspiration from Storm Talifero:
