Vegetarian Question Issue!!??!
Then, one of my friends asked "Well, aren't you just killing the rainforest?"
What should I have said?
Answers: I just started being a vegetarian a few days ago, and today at school I had a veggie sandwich. My friends asked me why I wanted to be a veggie, so I told them.
Then, one of my friends asked "Well, aren't you just killing the rainforest?"
What should I have said?
How is being a vegetarian killing the rain forest? I have to apologize, that is the most obscure thing I've ever heard.
In all actuality, being a vegetarian helps the environment. The business of cattle has diverse effects on the environment - so there are many reasons, outside of the death of an animal, as to why you should become a vegetarian.
And I can assure you, being one will not harm the rain forest.
not the rainforest, just the american landscape, its different.
don't listen to your friends your not killing the rain forests, your saving all the cute little animals! and just say to her "no, actually I'm helping save the enviorment!"
hope Ive helped :)
Meat consumption and Rainforest Depletion
Actually the rainforest is being cut on many acounts,: -
Trees are cut down to make room for rasing cattle
Trees are cut to grow feed for cattle.

First of all, it's awesome that you made such a great decision, also I would have said "HUH" what is this person talking about? What does the rain forest have to do with you eating vegetables? You will get a lot of rude odd comments. People just don't know any better sometimes. I would read up on being a vegetarian, so your prepared to defend your choice. GOOD LUCK! By the way when people ask me in a rude condescending way why I became a vegetarian, I say because I don't think any animal needs to die for my taste buds. If I see that the person only wants to start a fight over the issue I tell them don't worry it's not contagious, and I don't even start with them about the subject. These types of people are closed minded and have made up their mind a long time ago!!
The friend who said that said it because they are cutting down the rainforest to grow soy.
What most people don't know is that most the crops growing in the rainforest go to feeding corporate factory farms and not the soy that will turn into our tofu.
The Corn and soy that is growing where the rainforest should be goes to farms that owned by big corporations, like McDonald....the animals that are slaughtered become fast food....so, when your friend eat McDonald and Burger King, they are the ones destroying the rainforest :) not you.
If you want to let them know, do so, but don't be mean, most people don't know, and the best way to tell people about this stuff is to be informed and not judge.
So there you have it :)
Good luck fellow veg.
You could say "why, yes, as a member of humanity I am killing the rainforest, but my practice of vegetarianism actually helps to alleviate the damage done. You see, cattle must be fed, and it takes land to grow feed for cattle, it takes approximately 16 times the land to get the same amount of meat relative to a vegetarian alternative. If everyone went vegetarian than the need for added land for food production would be far less." Now, you could say that, but i think you will find that they dont actually care about the rain forest and won't really give a f*ck what you say. So don't worry too much.
How are you killing the rainforest if you're a vegetarian.
1st of all you shoulda have told them that vegetarians are exactly what they are: Vegetarians and that means NO MEAT. that still includes starches, bread, dairy, AND vegetables. Vegetarian is not just eating ALLLLL vegatables and that's what you should have said. They need to know that you are not harming the environment by what you are eating or not eating. Are these people truly your friends? They need to know about you and what you are about before the start critisizing you and what you eat.
Anything you may have had on that sandwich would not have come from the rainforest. It's just typical of people who don't understand trying to make jokes. Don't worry, they'll get used to your new choices soon :)
I don't see where the rainforest had anything to do with your sandwich...
The rainforest is being cut down to grow crops. However I highly doubt your vegetables were grown there!
Get used to these stupid questions. You just have to prepared with quick smart answers. Also, there is a hilarious shirt my daughter wears that says something to the effect of "May I please have a hamburger so I can hurry the cutting down of the rainforests"
I recommend that you read "Vegan Freak" Being Vegan in a non vegan World. Even if you are vegetarian a lot of it applies to what you will go through.
Not sure how eating a simple meatless (salad) sandwich would have drawn attention to your new way of eating?
Why don't you have a google on environmental issues, ethics, carbon footprints, food miles etc. and form your own views and opinions, so you will know what you think and why, without just parroting someone elses views.
Good luck =)
I am sorry!!!
well if your freind says that, they should watch some videos on slaughterhouses, i a have also become a vegetarian a couple days ago, and my freinds are curious
u are killing the rainforrest...just not as much as us meat eaters...where do u think the land comes from to plant the crops you eat...sure it aint as much as us meat eaters but you technically are still clearing forrest to plant crops.
