What do you think about going Vegetarian?!

Question: Just wondering your thoughts about being vegetarian?
I am thinking about doing it for a while and giving it a try. This is why: I have high blood pressure and could stand to lose some weight.
Do you think a vegy diet would help with that?
What do you think an ideal weight would be for someone that is 5'10" tall?

I tried going to a vegy diet once before and I felt kinda awe full, I only did it for about a week, any my stomach was a little queasy and I was light headed.
My normal diet is almost all meat, do you think this could have been some sort of meat withdrawal?

Just wondering some thoughts.

Also don't tell me to be a vegetarian for the animals, because it is the natural order of things for various animals to be eaten, thats why we have meat teeth as well as vegetable teeth.

I did the same thing that you are thinking about doing so maybe some of my experiences will help. I need to lose some weight so decided to do something drastic. I eat meat every day but decided to give up meat for Lent. I signed up for a website - sparkpeople.com. The good thing about the site is that you can track your diet for just about any nutrient to make sure you are eating healthy. Some nutrients are really difficult to get on a vegetarian diet so do some research. The benefits are that you will eat healthier and learn that you like some things that you may have never tried before. There are negatives though. Eating at a restaurant is difficult. You will find that you may only get one or two choices at most restaurants including salads because most have some kind of meat on them. Also prepared diet foods like Lean Cuisine have limited choices without meats so be prepared to make most of your own meals. One caution is that not all foods are healthy just because they don't have meat. Twinkies are vegetarian but that won't help you lose weight.

BORING

vegetarianism isnt the way to loose weight....just cut way back on the red meats and add more lean meats like chicken and fish they are low fat and paced with protein, which is essential for building lean body mass...good luck

The reason you felt bad is because you need meat. The Omega 3s that are in meat. You can get them otherwise though... So if you start a vegetarian diet, you need to take stuff with omega 3s in it.

personally i think that animals are there for us to eat. if you want to be a vegetarian then thats great but all of our animals (the ones we eat anyway) would probably die out. i feel if u do it for animal rights u shouldnt wear leather or anything like that. i hope my views are not too ignorant or uneducated.
if you think about animals in the wild, they eat each other, so we are like them. but if someone wants to be a vegetarian and are doing it for health benefits or because they feel very strongly about animals rights then i dont have a problem with it. everyone has a free choice on what they want to eat, which includes both vegetarians and meat eaters.
i just realised mine is more about morals but ill leave it up anyway

I think going vegetarian is super great because vegetarians live longer than meat eaters. Let me prove it OK meat has hormones pesticides chemical that can give u diseases. I'm a vegetarian and i feel great. There are fa mouse celebrities that are vegetarians and they said that once they started living the vegan life there skin got clearer and they felt better. If you don't believe me then go on peta2.com

Yes. Its completely meat withdrawal.
In fifth grade, I was vegetarian for about 6 months. I was always cheating, so it was too big of a deal when I gave in and ate a Wendy's burger after a half a year.
However, my friend has been a vegetarian since she was very, very young and has recently turned vegan. She can't even stomach meat.

So you see, whatever you give your body, it becomes accustomed to.
Your body is as accustomed to meat as my friend's body is accustomed to vegetables and the such.

And whoever answered before me is right. Don't be a vegetarian for the sake of losing weight.
In order to get the same amount of nutrients as you get on an omnivourous meal plan, you need to eat a lot more.

perhaps less meat, more fruits and vegetables; plus a bit more exercise, if you're not getting enough, will do you better than simply going into a stricly vegetarian diet.

by the way, if i'm not mistaken, the ideal weight for a man 5'10" talls is between 160 and 170 lbs. (heh, i used to be weight conscious too.)

dont turn to vegetarianism to lose weight
its not about that, but being healthier is one of the good things about IT
:]

I think a vegetarian diet could help. According to the American Dietetic Association: " Vegetarians have been reported to have lower body mass indices than nonvegetarians, as well as lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; vegetarians also show lower blood cholesterol levels; lower blood pressure; and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer."

A common problem with new vegetarians is that they don't know what to eat, so they just eat lots of salads and other low-calorie foods. Make sure you eat enough and include fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains in your diet. You can go to http://www.vegcooking.com/makingthetrans... for some transition tips and food ideas. Good luck!

GREAT!
Why Become Vegetarian?
There are as many reasons for becoming vegetarian as there are vegetarians; it's a highly personal and individual decision to make. But in a survey conducted on behalf of The Vegetarian Society the majority of people said that they gave up meat and fish because they did not morally approve of killing animals, or because they objected to the ways in which animals are kept, treated and killed for food.

With the growing awareness of the importance of healthy food, many people are also becoming vegetarian because it matches the kind of low fat, high fibre diet recommended by dieticians and doctors. Concern about the environment is another factor as people become more aware of the effect raising animals for their meat is having on the environment. Or you may be concerned about wasting world food resources by using land to raise animals for meat instead of growing crops that can feed more people directly.
