Does being a vegetrian help?!

Question: ive been a vegetarian my whole life. does being a vegetarian help the animals though?
would the same number of animals be killed no matter the number of vegetarians? how many animals does one vegetarian save?
and what is the percentage of vegetarians on earth and is it increasing or decreasing?

I don't even know if that is able to be calculated, but you have to know that there is some impact, even if it is small. Just like one vote can make a difference. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

"I am only one, but I am one. I can't do everything, but I can do something. The something I ought to do, I can do. And by the grace of God, I will.” -Edward Everett Hale

Yeah it saves animals. And it also saves plants. One vegetarian saves like an acre of rainforest a year or more or something. Just don't give up! Go further! Go vegan!

One person does and can make a difference. even the smallest action can make a change.

keep hanging in there. :)

I think it increased in high numbers due too mad cow , and chicken sickness.... people see eating meat can kill them. and alot of people do wanna save animals lives. so yes i think it increased alot... i know alot of my sisters friends dont eat meat at all and dont wear leather either ..... im not sure the percentage but im sure its alot higher then it was a while back.....

Good question. No, it doesn't stop the production in the meat industry, and it surely doesn't stop the animals being killed. Its just like roadkill, just because people are driving hybrids, doesn't mean there will be less roadkill.

All I know is that Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita "as long as there is animal slaughter there will be war and famine." So if you don't want to support animal slaughter, war and famine then continue being vegetarian. Also what goes around comes around (Karma) so if you kill you will have to be killed how ever many times you are involved in the killing or supporting the killing of an animal you will have to take birth and be killed. And especially if one is in charge of a country they get a huge percentage of the karma of the entire nation. So if they don't stop animal slaughter they will have to suffer so much life after life. Generally people who eat meat eat it every day. Some at least 2 meals a day. So imagine how many animals are being slaughtered just for the life of one person. hundreds or thousands. So you saved somewhere in that neighborhood of animals. Stay true stay compassionate. Don't support animal slaughter, which increases war and famine. (so many will have to die for all that slaughter, it is the law of nature The Vedas proclaim. Thanks. *Real World Peace!*

I don't know the statistics you are looking for but I can tell you that if God isn't worried about how many animals we raise and kill for food then why should we. The food laws in Leviticus chapter 11 clearly states by God Himself what animals He recommends us to eat as part of our daily diet. He also explains to us the proper way to slaughter and cook them. There is much more I could explain on this subject if your interested in hearing it.

less demand, less production.

No, because the meat industry in our society is REALLY huge. All you'll be doing is lowering prices. However, you'll be washing your hands of the meat industry if you become a vegetarian, which is about the best you can do.

"Does being a vegetarian help the animals though? Would the same number of animals be killed no matter the number of vegetarians? How many animals does one vegetarian save"......................................

There was a man walking along a beach covered in starfish that had washed ashore. Eventually he came across a small boy. This young boy was picking up the starfish one at a time and putting them back into the ocean.

The man went up to the boy and asked him what he was doing. The boy replied "I am putting them back into their ocean, back to their home".

The man was surprised and he said to the boy, "But there are are thousands and thousands of them. You are only putting them back one at a time. You can never put them all back, so what is the point of even trying? You are not making a difference."

The young boy stood for a moment, then bent over and picked up another starfish. He looked up at the man, held up the starfish and said, "It makes a difference to this one".

.

Farmers don't rear animals for fun, slaughter houses dont' kill them for fun.

So why does it happen ?

Because people buy meat or slaughter products.

I have the national average figures for how much meat the average person eats ( but I dont have the numbers to hand ) if you really want to know email me and i'll dig them out ( they are at the front of a book written by Linda McCartney if you want to search ti out yourself. ).

By not buying that meat, less animals are killed. Its a clear case of supply and demand.

How on earth can a top contributor in "health" be so misinformed about our need for meat ?

yeah it duz...... sum1 told me tht u liv longer and healthier if ur vegetarian..... i'm vegetarian 2!

I used to wonder the same thing, but here's what I reasoned: Sure, maybe if only one person alive were a vegetarian, it wouldn't help. But that one person would have a better conscience and know they were doing the right thing, and that makes it all worth it.

...but, since there are TONS of vegetarians in the world, we can know that we ARE making a difference. Not only by action, but by example. Don't lose heart.

Being a Vegetarian helps animals about as much as me being a meat eater helps carrots...

I applaud you on living your life how you want to live it but if you are living the vegetrian lifestyle because you think you are changing the world, you are mistaken.

Animals are food.

Humans eating animals is what allowed our distant ancestors to grow bigger and more intelegent brains which led to the evolution of homosapian.

If humans didn't eat both veggies and meat, we would still be naked, living in trees.

If it were not for animal skins and leather... we would still be naked, living in trees.

Again, I'm not saying anything against your life style or your 'people'... You would be shocked how pissed off some vegetrians get when you mention evolution...

Until we come up with a meat substitue that is as tasty as meat and as nutritionally complete as meat... Humans will continue to consume animals.

I TRULY hope that some day we will discover this meat substitute. The meat substitutes of today are NOT nutritionally complete... I go through meatless phases and I have read the lables of all the vegetrian products in the stores... and they are so full of sodium that they are VERY unhealthy...

I WISH that Americans were more open minded to alternative sources of protine... Like Insects... There is a HUGE movement in South America to bring back the antient practice of eating the HIGHLY nutrient rich insects of their regions.

Fresh, dried whole, dried and powdered and used as a seasoning, freezdried...

If we got over out stupid fear of creatures with either no legs or more then 4 legs we could reclaim a LOT of land and resources that are going to raise our "Acceptable" protine sources.

If you want to do some good, keep pressureing industry to streamline the meat production process...

Keep pressureing the industry to put animal welfare over poundage...

Just to let you know... Almost all the videos that PETA uses to show how "Evil" the meat industry is are very old and the exposure of their inhumane practices led to changes in the laws and the oversite of the meat industry...

I'm not saying that the industry is "Perfect" but there is MASSIVE oversight to make sure the animals are well maintained and humanely slaughtered.

It doesn't help. The same amount of animals get slaughtered. If their is too much meat the price gets lowered and people buy and consume more.
