Vegetarians and vegans please answer this?!
Answers: I am fairly sure that one advantage of a vegetarian/vegan diet is that protein from meat takes calcium out of your body. Am I right? Is there statements from credible studies in some kind of a book to state this. I need to know what book (s) state this fact and exactly what page it is on. Thanks people hey I don't want an argument I just want to know if I can back up what I think to be true and what book and page backs it up. Because my 28 year old sister has a degenerate bone disease, I could only think to myself OMG you need to go vegetarian. I suggested that but told her that if I could I would find out for her if it was true that protein took calcium out of your body. Thanks I really need your help.
I have read that not just meat but also dairy or any animal protein contributes to the leaching of calcium from the body, taking away any benefit of the calcium consumed from dairy.
"Diet For a New America" by John Robbins discusses Osteoporosis and the link with animal protein from pages 192-200.
Did you know that the top four dairy consuming countries are, coincidentally, also the countries with the highest rates of Osteoporosis? USA, UK, Finland, and Sweden. This is stated in the book as well.
Here's a link to the pages of the book:

I hope your sister can heal and have great bone health.
sorry i have no idea. i have toally diff reasons for being vegan.
i would think she would need meat... for the protein. does she take calcium supplements? calcium helps to build strong bones - and honestly, I don't think protein can eat away at calcium. I'm a vegetarian,... but that's not why i am. it's cuz i can't stand meat and it grosses me out. weird.. i know :)
I do believe that is true. Get your sis a copy of The China Study. The evidence in there is what you need.
I loaned out my copy of "The China Study" so I don't have the pages, but in it there is compelling evidence that the milk protein, casein, inhibits absorption of calcium. It shows how areas with less dairy consumption, there are lower incidences of osteoporosis.
That said, I'm sure the doctor knows what is best for your sister. My family went no dairy, but we don't have any health problems--good luck to your sister!
Digesting animal protein, in any form, causes an acidic environment in the blood. In order to neutralize this, the body leaches minerals, including calcium, from the bones. If you've ever taken Tums, you know that calcium is a base that acts as an antacid.
Here's a secondary source for this information, from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine: http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/prote...
In the section about osteoporosis there are two research studies referenced which you can look to for additional information.
John Robbins also covers this information in his books "Diet for a New America" and "The Food Revolution." His books are well researched and fully referenced.
Edit to add a +1 to sarahj's suggestion to read "The China Study." I don't have my copy handy either, but it's a must-read for this info and more.
I don't know about meat taking calcium out of your body, but my dad used to eat lots of meat. We would have ribs or steak at least twice a week. He went to the doctor, and he said he had high blood pressure and high bad cholesterol, so he became vegetarian, and both his bad cholesterol and blood pressure went down enough so that he doesn't have to take any medications (and it was REALLY high before).
Study after study proves that excessive consumption of protein inhibits calcium absorption, and is the actual cause of osteoporosis.
Advertising by the Dairy Council has convinced most Americans that dairy products are the answer, and yet, when consumption of dairy products rise, so do rates of osteoporosis.
