To vegans: will you drink breast milk?!
anyhoo would any of you vegans be interested in breast milk derived foods?
Answers: this is not even a joke question. i am breastfeeding. i have some extra frozen breast milk(not enough to donate) in my freezer. i have been wondering what to do with it as i dont like dumping it. i have two vegan friends(ethical reasons) who like to cook. i was wondering whether to ask them if they wanted the breastmilk for recipes, so they could have a dairy product that harmed no one. but maybe that will seem kinda weird. now i am thinking maybe i should make something with it for myself.

WOW! Finally, an interesting question not filled with the day to day drivel of modern life. This could have impacted grecian vegetarians thousands of years ago!
Personally, if it were my conviction to NOT eat anything that hurt an unwilling animal, and I was a milk freak, then I would DEFINITELY take you up on your offer.
I am certain the little guy in the avatar would prolly beat me to it though!!! LOL.
You get a star....
lol interesting question.
i'd like to know myself. =]
it tastes nasty
so no
Yeah breastmilk doesn't come from an animal it comes from a human so just ask them,
well i wouldnt, but to answer your quetions, yes it is vegan, because it isnt from an animal, it is from a human
humans are animals as well, we sure as heck aren't in the plant kingdom haha
Hmm...that's interesting. Because vegans refrain from milk because it hurts the animals and keeps them in bad conditions..., but since you gave up your milk willingly, then I'm sure it would be fine. But I don't know if I would want to drink my friend's breast milk, it seems a little weird. Probably depends on how it tastes, I don't know, I haven't had any since I was a baby!
If you raise a child as a vegan you can breast feed them because it's natural but after infancy it's no longer natural to drink any kind of milk including breast milk so no.
From an ethical stance, there's nothing wrong with drinking breast milk, but I'd much rather have milk made from soybeans. My guess is that most vegans would feel the same way.... but feel free to offer it to your friends!
I'm not an infant, so it wouldn't make any sense for me to consume food intended solely for nourishing an infant. I don't know why you'd think vegans in particular would want it, we have plenty of plant-based milks that suit our purposes just fine.
i wouldn't
but i have nothing against it.
Not really. I'm still breast feeding my 14 month old daughter and I am well aware of the fact that mammals don't need milk past being weaned, and I was weaned a bazillion years ago. No need to go back to it now. Human breast milk is high in fat (which is good for babies) and perfectly formulated to nurture and grow an infant - it's also full of antibodies. I can see how it might be beneficial, but I just don't see why I would want to go back to it.
Also, I don't know if you've ever tasted your own milk, but I don't like it (I had to take a sip now and then to make sure that defrosted, stored milk wasn't spoiled, or to check the temperature before giving it to my little girl). It really takes on the flavor of what you ate throughout the day (onion, garlic, sweets, etc.), since unlike cows who eat a very uniform diet every day we eat a very varied diet. So you'd have to coordinate your entire day's diet so that your milk would taste right for the recipe, I think (since you don't want milk that's laced with a cauliflower and onion taste to go into a sweet cake recipe, right?).
It's just not worth the bother in the end, not when there's so many great vegan (and adult-appropriate) dairy alternatives out there.
But hey, if it's your thing and something you want to do, go for it. I even read a story once about some man in his fifties who drank human breast milk every day that some lactating mom pumped for him, and he claimed he never got sick and had super high vitality. As to the authenticity of that, though... I have serious doubts. Also, I wouldn't try it.
In my opinion human breastmilk is only vegan as long as the person producing follows a vegan diet. But why would they want it? Milk is only for babies, right?
I think the whole point of breastfeeding is like mother/child bonding, but... leftover? I haven't a clue how to answer that... I think I would be weirded out, but they're close friends, right?
Imagine if breast milk became a regular thing on the market... we'd all be factory farmed like cows ><
Sidetrack... ^^'
If YOU are not a vegan, chances are that your milk is going to contain traces of other animal products and will therefore NOT actually be vegan.

Technically/ethically, yes a vegan can drink someone else's breast milk if the breat milk is surrendered willingly.
Although, like maggie mentioned, it tastes awful and takes on the flavours of what the mum had been eating. If your vegan friend chose to use some of it, it would be like cooking with a blindfold on. You don't know what's in it or what it's going to taste like.
Plus... they may also find it kinda gross!
That really is one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard. cows aren't harmed in the milking process either... O..M...G...
