Is it common that the longer you don't eat meat, the more the smell or sight of cooking meat repulses you?!

Question: I used to be a vegetarian and a vegan, and always lived in a meat eating household. The smell never really bothered me, in fact, for the longest time it still smelled good - especially bacon.

I have recently gone back to a ovo-vegetarian diet, and my husband still cooks meat. The other day he was baking chicken, a smell in which I loved, and it literally made me puke. Then he was cooking bison the other night and it just was so gross to me!!!

I don't want to push my diet on him, because if he is going to become a vegetarian, I feel he needs to do that on his own.... but it's just so gross now.

Is this normal and if so, how do you deal with it?

That's really nice that your husband isn't going to be cooking meat in the house anymore. I've been vegetarian for 14 years and vegan for 2, the smell of meat has made me ill for as long as I can remember. Bacon and taco meat are the most repulsive to me. Now even cheese smells gross to me, and I used to love that stuff! I think what you're describing is pretty common.

it depends on how often you are exposed to it. my brother is a vegetarian, but he's also a cook, so he deals with meat all the thime and it doens't bother him. i have known people who are vegetarians that just don't expose themselves to it and when they do, they get mildly sick.

I'm sure that could be a factor, but have you considered this? Is it possible that you could be pregnant? That tends to turn one's stomach pretty badly... and the smell thing is a big part of that.

not at all.not 4 me anyway! ive been a vegetarian a good long while, but i still crave a good char-broiled cheeseburger!!!the smell makes my mouth water!!but i dont give in.for ethical and health reasons,i will not eat meat.i think a lot of the vegetarian "oh,it makes me sick!" is all in the mind.ethically i am opposed to eating sentient creatures, but i dont have a physically adverse reaction to it.everyone is different tho,ur disgust is valid.evryone reacts differently to stimuli.thats all.

Omg, I thought I was the only one. The last year I have barely ate meat and now it's hard for me to smell it, especially red meat. I used to cook with it all the time when I was married, then I divorced and I'm not sure if the two are related but I can't even look at the meat section of the grocery store bc I start getting queasy. I would just try not to think about it when he's cooking and maybe light a scented candle or something.

no its not normal maybe your husband doesnt know how to cook or the meat was bad

With all the negative things one hears about meat, it is no wonder that even the smell of meat cooking makes you sick. How about if you agree on eating only certain things at home and make it a special outing to go to great restaurant which serves wonderful meat dishes and has a fantastic salad bar.
Alternatively you could agree to have meat dishes at home only when they were fixed outside. I am sure your husband will cooperate if he has seen you getting sick.

As I have got older, now when i look at people eating meat, I see animals. Like in a bacon sandwich, I think about the pig that once lived.

I wonder what that animal did, or how much it sunlight it got, or if it gave birth, or if it felt really scared when they took it to kill it. I always wonder if the animal was a girl or boy?

kimberley why do you use that same trolling comment yet no one notices but me.....to sit there and spout that is like me going oh i wonder if that tomato had lots of sun and had a good life...thats just crap...oh and to the people that say we dont need meat...heres one for you...we dont have to eat apples but you do...so how can you say i dont eat meat cuz we dont have to when you eat apples and other fruit that you dont have to....and you say the apple is to be eaten well your doing it wrong......apples are meant to be fully eaten then the seeds dispersed not thrown in a bin.
