As you didn't specify what type of vegetarian (including dairy and/or eggs, or not):

Rennet is in most cheeses (often just listed as "enzyme").

Gelatin is in most low-fat yoghurts, most soft candy and also crops up in several other places you wouldn't expect to find it.

Egg can be found in some soft candies, and also some breads, pasta, noodles, etc.

Some alcoholic drinks (particularly wines), were made with the assistance of egg, milk, fish or seafood products, and "traces may remain."

There are dairy products in a lot of breads, margarines and probably places you're not expecting them to be.

Most commercially produced chips (french fries) are pre-cooked in tallow (animal fat) before shipping to the restaurants and supermarkets.

Carmine (cochineal) is a red colouring made from insects. It occurs in a lot of red candy and red drinks. Its additive number is E120.

White sugar is produced by filtering with charcoal, which often is made from animal bones.

There are also a lot of animal products hiding behind additive numbers. E471 (an extremely common emulsifier, found in a lot of processed foods. Sometimes it is vegetable-derived, but not often), E904 (shellac, a glazing agent coming from an insect), E901 (beeswax), E542 (bone phosphate), etc. There is a list here:

First you have to decide what kind of vegetarian you would like to be. Some vegetarians eat eggs, others don't. If you choose to be a vegan, then that means you don't eat meat, eggs, or dairy products. Strict vegans also don't eat honey, or any type of gelatin, which is used in many products. If you are just starting out, you should go it a little slower. Maybe just give up red meat this month, then chicken, then fish, and then see how you feel about taking it further or going back a bit. It's all up to you.

Hello,

All forms of animals and their by-products. This includes Gelatin, Carmine, Chicken Stock, Beef Stock, Fish Stock, and most forms of rennet.

If you would like more detailed answers, I recommend looking around this section for similar questions - they are asked at lest twice a day.

Also, search sites like http://www.goveg.com and http://www.vrg.org for great articles and information.

GL in your choice! : )

the best thing is to read the labels. When you read words like soy and "no diary", its usually a good indication.

Good luck on making a great decision.

Again good luck!

Vegetarians can eat everything except:
- meat, this includes fish, other seafood, chicken, red meat
- gelatin which comes from animal tendons & bones. found in many chewy lollies and even some yogurts
- renett from cows stomachs. found in most cheeses
- tallow or lard from animal fat used in some fried foods.
- eggs and or milk depending on whether you are ovo, lacto, or ovo-lacto vegetarian.

I'm a vegetarian, so I don't eat any meats like chicken, fish or red meats, and I don't eat gelatin products, either.
I always look out for artificial rennet in cheeses and such, and always read the label of something.
HIH!!!
