Sugar and bones?!
Answers: Ok so I'm making a b-day cake for a friend (i just asked the egg question) IS it true that some labels off sugar make theif sugar be filter it thru animal bones? It sound really out there but i want to make sure. I bought the cheap store brand kind, do i need to buy a differrent one? Is there anythingg else I need to consider before I make this cake.(beside the no eggs and dariy)
Ask her if she's okay with it. In my opinion I think things like bone char refined sugar really defeat the purpose of veganism. The point is to avoid exploitation, not just avoid animal products for no reason. She may not agree with me.
eta: Contrary to what the first poster said, you do NOT need to sub spelt and sea salt for wheat and regular table. Those have nothing to do with vegetarianism.
no cane sugar is one thing to consider use agave sweetener its way better than cane sugar and its good for ya and use spelt flour not wheat, sea salt if you gunna use salt and non alluminum baking soda.
Yes, most sugars are refined with charcoal, which can be derived from animal bone. I've never seen a bag that clearly states how their sugar is refined. You can always opt for agave nectar (as previously suggested), turbinado, sucanat, or molasses. If you have a Whole Foods market near you, they carry sugar that is both vegan (says so on the packaging) and fair trade certified.
Other than the sugar, I can't think of anything else you would need to know about making the cake.
Best wishes!

About half of all sugar from sugar cane is processed with bone char, the rest with activated carbon. According to one of my vegan cook books, The best thing to look for is granulated cane sugar.
Beet sugar, evaporated cane juice, turbinado sugar and non-sugar sweeteners would be vegan friendly. The most commonly sold brands of granulated cane sugar, including Domino and C&H, are filtered through bone char. The only way you'd know if other brands of cane sugar are bone char filtered or not would be to call the manufacturer. The Florida Crystals brand is vegan and Whole Foods carries vegan sugar under their 365 label. If your friend knows you're baking for her, ask her if this is something she's concerned about.
