Are you a locavore?!

Question: Not only do I eat vegan but I try whenever possible to eat local as often as possible patronizing the local farmers market. This is one of the best ways to help environment, eat healthier, all while enlivening the local economy, I highly suggest reading Bill McKibben's Deep Economy to find out more and why so.

I curious what other peoples thoughts are on this matter. Do you practice such? Have you ever heard of it? Are you wanting to do more but need encouragement? Respectful answers are more than welcome.

Yeah, I definitely prefer to be a locavore. I live in southern California, and there's no excuse not to eat locally grown food here. The growing season is year-long and there are various farmers markets every day of the week in the LA area.
Even better yet: I try to grow my own food. I've got broccoli and lettuce in the side yard. The broccoli leaves make great wraps for tofu scramble! (okay, i buy tofu and it's not locally grown) I'm a renter and am lucky to have a very small plot of land to grow things on. I can't wait to have my own house and yard with fruit trees and a bigger vegetable garden!
Thank you for the book recommendation!

Hey I have totally heard of that and I support it a hundred percent. I actually did a presentation regarding eating local at my school. It makes sense! Saves gas, helps your local economy, and encourages biodiversity.

I love to eat foods raised locally whenever possible. It's much fresher, if nothing else. I'm also the one who supports the mom-and-pop stores before I'll support a national chain, even if it costs me a few cents more. But I'm no vegan, if that matters to you.

Hi there,

Do you practise such?
I try to, but I'm really busy working and going to uni so it's a bit difficult. I do grow some of my own veggies in the backyard, and try to go to the markets.

Have you ever heard of it?
Yep I've heard of it. There is a section about a locavore diet in Peter Singer's the ethics of what we eat. Most people don't realise the benefits of eating locally grown food.

Are you wanting to do more but need encouragement?
The problem is finding time to go to markets, they are usually a bit far away and not so convenient. Lots of benifits though too.

Great question =)

Great Question!!

I am not a vegan or a vegetarian but I consider myself a locavore and an Americanovore. I prefer to eat food grown in the USA. Eating local produce is not an option most of the time just as eating produce /meat / fish grown or raised in the USA is not becoming an option....Not a good situation.

Have a great day.

No I am an loca-regio-intervore. I eat foods obtained locally regionally and internationally.

I totally agree with you.

I want to KNOW where my food is coming from, who is growing it, how it was grown.

I just found out that I have a local organic grower - actually right in my area that I knew nothing about till we got to talking about vegetables - - and have bought a membership into the co-op for a years worth of organic vegetables that are grown local and will be brought to my doorstep.

Even when I buy from grocery store - I look to see where the produce is coming from before I purchase it - and will not purchase things not grown within the United States. I have been doing this for a few years now.

I totally agree that we need to start supporting local farmers. If we don't - we won't have local farmers. I also grow some of the things that I eat as well. I already mentioned the co-op that I just joined.

I am all for the getting back to knowing who is growing the food that I am eating vs. just picking blindly off a shelf and crossing my fingers that the buyer that bought what is on the grocery shelf is really safe and grown as they say.

Yes, I've heard of "locavores" and I am one! I believe in CSAs (community supported agriculture) and try to buy as much produce as possible from local farmer's markets instead of from the large supermarket chains. It's so wonderful to plan meals according to what is in season, and actually eat TRULY fresh vegetables. Often times the veggies at the supermarket appear old and gross.

I agree that eating locally is a great way to help the environment and the local economy. From what I've read, small farmers really get ripped off these days by the big corporations and the supermarkets (middlemen). I also find that the produce is much cheaper from local farmers than at supermarkets, so it's a great buy (from a self-interested perspective).

Thanks for the book recommendation. Will have to check it out. Highly recommend the documentary "The Future of Food" (www.futureoffood.com) for info on future of farming, GMOs, etc.
