I know tomatoes are rich in iron, so if you could make a gravy with tomato juice or tomato sauce that would enrich it with iron. Potatoes are rich also. So eating the gravy on the potato would help. Enriched rice would be good to put the gravy on!. Beans, spinach, fish, eggs cereal are tastey ways to get more iron.

What are you making the gravy from? If it's from a vegetarian base, I doubt it.

The site below lists some veggies and grains that include iron, plus how much per serving.

Your gravy will only have iron in it if you make it with iron rich foods, such as leafy greens, kale, swiss chard, spinach, etc. You can easily make a veggie broth with high iron foods, then make gravy from the stock. Cooking in cast iron pans will boost your iron levels as well. Avoid "iron fortified" foods-they contain iron shavings, and are not absorbed by the body. If you take an iron fortified cereal, put it in a zip lock bag with a little water, crush it up and place a magnet on the outside of the bag, the shavings will come to the surface. Here is a video link: I have done this myself to prove it: This applies to "enriched" rice, pasta and other fortified foods as well. Your better choices for irons are vegetable sources.

Vegan Marmite Gravy

Ingredients

1 tbsp soy garden or olive oil
1 large onion - thinly sliced
2-3 tbsp flour
2 tsp marmite
1/2 pint water, or thereabouts
Herbs are optional for additional flavor (for "chicken" use sage. for "beef" use rosemary)

Instructions

1) Heat margarine/oil in a large cast iron pan and add the thinly sliced onion. Cook the onion over a low heat until slightly caramelized.

2) Stir in the flour- blending very well to avoid lumps. Cook for a few minutes, stirring all the time.

3) Stir in the the marmite with a wooden spoon, then slowly add boiling water.

4) Herbs, and simmer until the gravy has thickened.

I also like to add thinly sliced black mushrooms.
