Are you a vegetarian? If so...why?!

Question: I have been since I was 5. I saw some battery farmed chickens on TV, asked my Dad if chickens on a farm were like the ones on my plate and he said yes. I stopped eating it there and then.

I would never eat meat again because I believe that the majority of farming is cruel. And I can't stomach the idea of eating something dead.

No I am not. Humans are designed to be omnivorous.

"maids moreton" maybe right that humans are omnivores. I won't argue that point.

But we are also designed to father and give birth to off-spring at about 12 years old. Is that right too ?

Just because the body is capable of something does not mean its right.

We cannot claim we are naturally designed to eat meat and then use completely artificial processes to rear and produce it. Thats selective logic and not valid.

If people want to use the "its natural" arguement they should go and kill a cow with thier bare hands and eat it raw. Then I'll be happy to agree its natural.

Anyway, onto the question......

I became veggie because of animal welfare initially.

I visited a pig farm on an open day becasue they had won awards for animal husbandry and i was curious as to how they were kept. I was shocked to see they were kept in the dark all thier lives in cramped conditions with no natrual foraiging etc.. Remember this was a farm that had just won an award.

I arrived a meat-eater, left a veggie. I was 14. there was no way I was going to sponsor that treatment of animals.

Since then i've realised there is no need to eat meat for a healthy diet and no longer see animals as food.

I visit dairy, beef and sheep farms most weeks and have seen nothing since to make me change my mind.

veggie for 28 years

I don't eat dairy stuff, that sucks. I eat eggs just because they come from my own eggs at home so know exactly how the hens are kept. If I didn't have those hens, i'd be vegan.

EDIT: "Damnyank" mentions that inuit "thrive" on a mainly meat ( fish ) diet. He failed to mention thier average live span was 52 years. Strange how he missed that fact eh ?

As for eating raw meat and having to cook veggies. Sorry, its compeltely the other way around. Go pick a rabbit out of the forest and eat it raw, go on, try it. I'll sit and watch the stomach cramps and vomiting while eatng my raw carrots. I apologize in advance if i smile at your discomfort.

Some Chinese believes that if you are a vegetarian for a certain amount of time, your loved ones whose is dying will recover. Some people says it works. I am not sure though. Interesting right?

Vegan for ethical, environmental, and health reasons.

Ovo Lacto Vegetarian: to boost my health, wellbeing and the environment.

Because animals have a voice too. Fact.

i am a vegetarian because i generally get sick of meat and i also hate animal cruelty and want to know wat i am eating

yes, because I find the idea of eating flesh repulsive

Omnivore with strong carnivorous tendencies.

Vegetarian diets, especially vegan diets, are unhealthy and unnatural. Humans can very easily eat and digest raw meat and thrive on such a diet (e.g. the Inuit). Most plant foods, however, have to be cooked to be edible and digestible.

Humans evolved from predominantly frugivore apes to become a meat-eating species. Sure we can't cut in to an animal carcass with our bare hands and teeth, but we evolved to learn how to bang two rocks together to make stone blades and spear points. Sharp claws and teeth aren't necessary then.
