Do you think we could ever give up meat?!

Question: arnt there always going to be people that do depend on meat such as some places in africa and siberia where it is very hard to grow crops..i am an omivore and yes i do care about animals thats why i research where i get my meat from..but if we were to stop using these animals like that and released them and vegetarians did the same by only collecting fruit and veg from the wild...would half the world population starve...and the reason a said vegetarians aswell is because harvesting crops in feilds isnt natural either.....just wondering what some people think we should do...i mean i only eat meat one or twice a week anyway

Possible?Of course, as anything is possible.
Probable? No, I don't think so. Western vegetarians' sentiments about animals is certainly not shared by the vast majority of the people in this world. It is not even shared by the vast majority in the west itself.

Do we need to eat meat? Maybe not. But we do not need to eat plants exclusively either. Unfortunately, such luxury of choice is not available to most people.

I have been vegetarian for more than 8 years.I'm really happy about that.Animals also feel the same as humans.Don't eat meat even for a minute.According to buddhism eating flesh is a sinful thing.

Not me. I looove a good thick ribeye! Oh, I know it's not good for me. But... Yuuum! Sorry if it's not the answer you were looking for. Thanks!

Well in the end we will have too. Where gonna run out. Not for a long time though. Umm... I don't think we will ever collect vegies from the wild. That's dangerous.

Your original question was quite intriguing but you go on to seem to slate everyones opinion. All i know is that at the moment, people have a choice, you have made yours, they have made theirs,we will no doubt evolve and adapt to whatever food choices we need to make as time goes by.

Not everyone can be healthy on a vegitarian diet so it would no be a good idea. Cutting back would be good for almost everyone though.

Not possible, it's in our genes, we're omnivores

I didn't think I could until I tried. I ate meat all the time before I became a vegetarian and I loved the taste. My parents were meat eaters and didn't agree with my choices - but i did it.

No, i do not think that globally mindkind will give up meat.

If the population continues to rise we need to either find a way of creating artifical food for animals, or more people need to move to a veggie diet.

The current level of population growth and absorbing land for growing cereals to feed animals for meat consumption is not sustainable.

There is little chance of meat being priced at its real cost, there is too much at stake for the subsidised industries who have high lobbying influence over politicians. So, i doubt if meat will be priced to a correct level. This is a shame because this would naturally lower the current meat consumption levels which are the highest proportion of our diet than at any time in history. Meat consumption has rocketed in the last 50 years due to commercial farming rather than traditional farming. Because of the price wars people now think "cheap meat" is a god-given right. If that mind-set were changed then the meat requirements of the world would not be such a problem

The vegetarian population is growing at a compounded 5% per year. This is not enough to influence the amount of meat being eaten in any significant way to change the worlds requirements.

Its not "ignorant" to say we don't need meat, its just a fact. There is no need to get upset by a simple fact.

Eating a carrot for variety has far less impact on the world than eating meat. The 2 choices are not really comparable when you take into account the fact that you are taking the life of a being that has thought, decision making, pain, memory, moods, community and individual association.

EDIT: there is nothing "wrong" with you eating meat, i'm not interested in persuading you otherwise. Why are you asking me whats wrong with it. As above, you cannot compare eating a banana and eating a once-living being. The impact to the living animal far outways the impact to a banana.

It's impossible for everyone to go veggie.

Eat what you want. Fact. :-)
