What is the difference between corn syrup and cane sugar. Is one really better than the other?!

Question: High-fructose corn syrup generally contains about 55% fructose to 45% glucose. Cane sugar contains sucrose, which breaks down rapidly to a 50%-50% mix of glucose and fructose. HFCS is sweeter. Try to avoid both, because they give you a high glycemic load with no other nutrients to justify it. Empty bad calories. The excess fructose in HFCS can cause a syndrome like lactose intolerance in people with fructose malabsorption. The genetic modification of the corn is probably irrelevant, because the product is so highly purified that unusual protein products, which would result from aberrant DNA, probably won't appear in the final product.

Corn syrup is a by product produced from genetically modified corn-its full of nasty stuff, and is in most everything thats commercial, such as soda, foods, drinks, juices, medications, cough syrups, etc. Genetically modified foods are scary enough without turning them into something so widely produced (genetically modified foods have been spliced with the DNA of other food and non food things, such as pesticides, scorpion venom, etc., to make the crops more resistant to pests, and to grow faster) Most cane sugar is just as bad-the crops are GMO, and heavily sprayed with pesticides and fungicides. Your best bet as a sweetner is natural agave nectar, which is a bit like honey, only its thinner. I use it for everything, including baking. If you do use sugar, your best choice is raw, unprocessed sugar-the white stuff has been bleached with chemicals and is "refined" with loads of stuff-not a natural food at all.

They are both horrible for your health, but corn syrup is the most horrible of the two. I would recommend staying as far away from both as possible. *sm*

no they are both great foods for quick energy bursts

High Fructose Corn Syrup is one of the least healthy sweeteners you can use, on par with aspartame. Cane sugar has a high glycemic index as well but at least it's not made with genetically modified corn and other genetically modified products (including fungi and bacteria) to process it. Read this for the scoop on how bad it really is, you'll never want to put that crap in your body again: http://crunchy-people.blogspot.com/2008/...
