Why do some people slander a vegetarian diet?!

Question: Hi guys,

I posted this because I'm so tired of ignorant people slandering vegetarian diets.

I went veggie at 8 years old. 10 Years on, and I feel really healthy and happy with myself, so why would some people want to bring me down for being unique?

A qualified Nutritionist told me my vegetarian diet is very healthy and balanced. I must be doing something right, ten years with no supplements!

So guys, if you know nothing about vegetarianism, do your research before you slander it! :-)

I don't bash other groups. I'm so very accepting of other cultures, other religions, the gay community, etc

It's because they're afraid =( the people who attack vegetarians are those who really just don't want to know where their steak comes from, because they're afraid of the truth. And they're afraid of having to restrict their diet, and of not being able to enjoy the foods they used to should they become a vegetarian.

The best thing you can do in response to these people is show them how a veg*n diet isn't one of hate or anger or restriction, but one of love ^_^

(also check out the Compassionate Cooks podcast on itunes or at www.compassionatecooks.com, if you haven't already heard of it! It's got lots of ideas and info about speaking your truth and how to explain vegetarianism to close-minded people. It's super great)

I'm a vegan and I'm proud.
No one can keep me down
I don't want to harm animals, so what?
It my ideas on life :)

I'm not sure. I ask myself this same question all the time. I became a vegetarian in the last year and sometimes other peoples reactions really amaze me. It seems as though they are actually offended by my diet at times. Makes no sense to me....

You seem like a very nice person. I've been a vegetarian for two and a half years. I get called all hippie and tree hugger all the time. At first people were trying to slip meat into my food. Jerks. I don't see why they do that. It's not like I rub it in their face and scream at them for eating meat. Like they should respect me for who I am and what I believe. People these days seem to have no respect for anything diffrent.

What hurts the vegetarian cause is the so-called vegetarians they proclaim and advocate (in your face) how healhty a vegeatrian lifestyle is. cruel-free... etc but they still eat fish (pescatarians) or chicken. They are the Jehovah's Witness equivalent of vegetarians.

Other than that, my attitude is "to each his own."

yeah you hit the nail on the head i totally agree with you!

That same slander works both ways. I have seen considerable lies and misunderstandings posted here by the V&Vs.

hi, most probably because they havent got the compassion to be one!!
i think people who eat meat are selfish because they eat it regardless of the suffering the animal has gone through!
i'm a vegan and i certainly dont preach to people who eat meat as i feel everyone has their own choice, but some seem to want to have a dig at us!

I hate to burst your bubble but your far from unique. Ben Franklin was an avid vegetarian and he started while trying to save some money. He later decided it was good for the animals also except one voyage were he gave in and ate fish. He said when he saw they ate each other it was justified. Anyway, your young and you can choose what you can and can't eat but don't put so much stock in other peoples opinions, they are all like aas holes they all stink and are mostly full of crap.

I am vegan, and I think you will find all veg*ns are accepting of other cultures and communities - because our reason for being veg*n is because we CARE about other beings suffering. Its dissapointing that people want to bring us down, but I think all veg*ns have a strong willed nature and just learn to deal with it.

I find that people will ask why I am vegan, and I am very willing to answer this question. But often afterwards they claim I am trying to make them feel bad for eating meat.

It's unavoidable, but you know deep down it is the right moral choice - we just have to show meat eaters it can be done (I use no supplements as well, yay us!) Most comments made are lame and unorigional now anyway - weve heard it all.
"god made animals for us to eat" - then why did god make animals feel pain?
"humans were made to eat meat" - how come I fell 100x better eating no meat products at all
"oooh I feel like a big juicy steak"- good for you!

This is not a tolerant society no matter what we are talking about.

i guess they do not know that a well balanced vegetarian diet can provie all the necessary vitamins and minerals that we need daily without even having to include any fish, egg or meat substances..just leave them alone..u can earn better friends elsewhere...

u kno i agree, and i think its cause thier ignorant. thats all. they dont have an open mind.

ur the best, scottie boy

I chose to be a veggie at six, and 8 years on I'm still with it.
I haven't died yet, anyways.

i have vegetarian friends and i always have only vegetables for a week in every month and yes i feel Healthier

i don't eat fish at all and don't care if any one says some thing to me about it cuz i'm eating for my self
