Answers: I am in the process of becoming a vegetarian, but I find it getting harder and harder to resist from eating meat. I want to find some ways to take away the want for meat, and also I want to know what are some good substitutes that taste like meat. I really need some help, because no one in my family is vegetarian, and I am trying for the first time.

If you are craving meat you may not be getting enough iron or protein.
Eat lots of dark, green leafy veggies and lots of beans (dark red kidney beans and pinto beans for sure).
Also, Morning Star farms make amazing meat-substitute foods!
These are AWESOME!!!!

Congrats on your lifestyle change. :) I wish I had kept up with it (lasted almost 2 years) but I was too weak! /cry

I've never liked Boca. I know it's one of the largest brands for vegetarian substitute. But I do like Morning Star Farms brand. They make a lot of different substitute products.
Well, I'm a vegetarian and have been my whole life. But I just refused to eat meat when I was young. I found out that the only thing that your body isn't getting out of meat is vitamin B12. There are many pasta dishes, fruit, vegetables, etc. things to eat. Also try soy milk in a fruit smoothie...you want taste the soy milk and you will receive a lot of protein, and fiber.
Don't think of meat as food. Try to think of it as a substance that may contaminate what would otherwise be perfectly good food. Does it help if I tell you that you will probably eventually forget exactly what meat tastes like if you keep this up?
That said, I think that Boca vegan grillers (veggie burgers) and their fake ground beef do a pretty good meat impersonation. I'm also a fan of Morningstar Farms sausages and sausage patties. (The latter can be used with Bisquick to make sausage biscuits.)
I think about dead animals on the highway. Bloody, stinking animals. Flies. It turns me off. I buy soy protein called Mori-Nu. I mix it with soup, and fry it for breakfast, like eggs. It has no taste. I also cook pasta with all kinds of sauces. There are plenty of vegetarian choices on the menus.
just have a nice slaughter video ready in ur dvd player when u feel for eating meat i think it will help
I have been Vegetarin for 11 years, personally it was not a choice it just came I never had the urge to eat meat even when I was younger.
If your want to become a vegetarian you should want it and not have to force yourself to stop eating meat.
But like others have said there is alot of range in supermarkets and other places, if you want to get into the subsitution.
It is challenging for the first few months, but eventually, you will be put off by meat. Its just what you are used to, so you feel deprived. There are tons of meat analogs on the market, such as boca burgers, quorn, etc, even tofu dogs and deli meats that supposedly taste like meat. I don't like them, and neither does my 13 year old vegetarian daughter, but many veggies use them with good results. Just change your mindset, and try some new vegetarian ethnic recipes that you have never had-keeping your diet fresh and interesting will help you lose your desire for meats. The library is a great place to start, as is the ethnic section here on answers. Try something like aranchini (rice balls stuffed with veggies), quinoa (a whole grain that is a complete protein, and can be cooked in many recipes, much like rice. Try curries, asian noodles, bean and cheese tacos, etc. You can usually adapt your favorite recipes by just substituting beans, lentils and whole grains for the meat, such as in casseroles, etc. Also, if you like fish, you might try adding some seaweeds, such as dulse, arama, hijiki, etc. to your diet-they have a lovely seafood flavor and are VERY healthy-just be sure to buy a good brand that has low mercury levels. Another fun thing to do is try veggies and fruits you have never even heard of before-go to a farmers market and look at all the goodies, such as kohlrabi, thai green coconuts, etc. Good luck! Hang in there-it DOES get easier--you just need to change the way you think about it. Your body will thank you for it in the long run.
I can't help you because I just stopped eating meat and never looked back. No regrets.
But what I can tell you is that if it's worth doing, and you really wanted it, you can do it.
Tofu is a substitute, but you clearly don't like it. There are some tender vegetables you could use, and sometimes food tastes so good you don't even notice there isn't meat.
Have you tried freezing tofu? It's completely different from fresh when you defrost it: it has a much more meaty texture. What I like to do is pour a lot of salt onto the ice when it's defrosting, then when done, pour the water away so most of the salt goes with it. Then cut it into short thin slivers and fry until crispy, makes a good bacon substitute for meals like carbonara.
