What exactly is TOFU? Do you eat it?!

Question: I'm veggie but I have never seen tofu in my life.

This is not a joke, it's true!

What is is, do you eat it? Every vegan/veggie seems to talk about it.

I feel a bit left out :-(

I eat it.. I LOVE IT

it is made from "Curdling" soy milk, similar to the way chese is maade from curdling cows milk or goats milk..

It is mostly flavorless by itself, but it soaks the flavors of whatever sauces and spices you cook it with.. this makes it YUMMY!!!

I suggest going to a nice chineese restraunt in a big city, you'll find it on the menu.. if you like chineese food, I suggest trying a tofu dish at such a restraunt.. They know how to make it delish.. and it's a good way to try tofu for the first time.. it MAY be called "bean curd" on the menu, bear in mind..

you ARE missing out.. join the tofu-lover's club!! we welcome you with open arms.. find websites with good recipies..

Just keep in mind (something some noobs don't realize) there are two major types of tofu

Silken- this is found on shelves in a store in small cardboard type "Boxes" this is NOT for use for most entrees, but is better for using in deserts, soy mayonaises, stuff like that.. it does not need to be refrigerated

Firm- This you find in small plastic containers where a block of tofu is sitting in water in the container.. You find it in your produce section, and it DOES need to be refrigerated.. THIS is the kind you'll want to buy for entrees like stir fries, scrambled tofu, etc etc.. I reccomend buying one that says "extra firm" on the label..

Hope this helps a bit!!

soybean curd eaten in replace for meat. very versatile because you can use it as eggs, in a smoothie, stir-fry, make patties, etc. It takes on the flavor of whatever you put in it. comes in a variety of textures -- try it it's good.

YES you eat it!! It's this lumpy stuff made from soy. It has no color or odor unless made with seasonings.

In my opinion, it's gross. Vegetarians eat it because it's high in protein.

Hope I helped!!

It's soybean curd. Usually sold in a brick form.

It's extremely porous so it takes flavors like a sponge. And you can stir-fry it, bake it, grill it, anything really, and if marinated it's pretty decent.

It's also used in many meatless veggie fake-meat products, like tofu dogs.

Also great if you use soft tofu, for a smoothie. Fruit, juice, silken tofu, blender = smoothie.

Edit: Yes, you can buy it at any supermarket. It's very cheap to, probably around $1.25 a 2 lb. brick.

its soy bean. they mash it & for a nice white cube. sometime it tasteless, but can be a great ingredient for soup or you can fry it & stuff it with other salad vegie + chilli. thats how vegan enjoy food.

its rich with protein. good for muscle.

scott, tofu is made from soy beans. it's processed like the cheese but not exactly. its color is beige or dirty white or cream. it's sold in the grocery of the malls or market in cubes or square. you can cook it with meat or other vegetables. it's good. you can also fry tofu.

Tofu is actually soya beancurd. It taste delicious and is often sold in the supermarkets in tubes or packagings. Some of them are fried together with pork, some steamed and some even with chilli and, tomyum or sweet and sour sauce. They can replace meat and they taste really soft!

Some shi t that disgusting ppl eat

ita a curd made from soy it's used as a replacement for meat

soya bean curd subs for meat it's ok if nicely flavoured

Tofu is soybean curd and can be found in most supermarkets in soft or firm varieties.

Firm tofu cubes used instead of meat make a great stir-fry with onions, mixed veg and oyster sauce. Even non-veggies love this.

It's beancurd, as people have said. Tasteless but takes on the flavours of whatever it's cooked with or marinated in.

I know you live in the UK - it's available at all major supermarkets - never seen it in the Co-Op, but maybe bigger branches sell it. The one most often sold in supermarkets is Cauldron, and you'll find it in the chilled cabinet with other cauldron stuff like their pate, sausages etc

It's sold in health food shops too - Holland & Barrett sell it, for example.

Tofu is made from soy bean curd and is an excellent source of protein.
