Your mom does not need to worry about protein as long as you are eating a balanced, varied diet. It's a complete myth that vegetarians lack protein. Here is some information about it from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine: http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/prote...

The PCRM also has a vegetarian starter kit on their website. For additional nutritional information, look for a book called "The New Becoming Vegetarian" by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina. Both are registered dietitians and their book covers all you need to know about good nutrition as a vegetarian.

For me there was no "finally." I was a happy meat eater until I read about the treatment of animals, the prevalence of diseased animals making it into the food supply, the environmental toll intensive animal agriculture has on the environment, and several other factors. Once I knew, that was it - I've been vegetarian ever since.

The movie fast food nation. Most people get enough protein in their diets without meat. You can try eating boca burgers, more beans, anything with soy prodects etc...

Hi! I am a vegetarian due 2 my religion, and i am just right 4 my age. If u go 2 this website and watch the video, it'll probably make anyone quit eating meat. http://www.chooseveg.com thats wat got my friend's mom 2 let her be a veggie, and she feels great! Hope i helped

The only meat I eat is chicken and fish. and that is it!... Even the site of a hot dog, and red meat makes me sick! Just knowing that a poor animal was butched cruely makes me not want to eat it! and not want to contribute to that problem. The only reason I eat chicken and fish is because i'm a health freak, and those meats are very good for you... and they're not red meats! Although, one day i'd like to give that up too.

Hiya,

I've been a vegetarian for 10 years. I'm going to give you some tips:

Make sure you eat a variety of foods. Nuts, yougurt, cow's milk, soya milk, eggs, beans, these are foods that will provide protein, without the ''bad'' fats.

Don't listen to people who may put you down. It's your life, *your* decision.

I became a vegetarian at 8 years old after watching a video at my school about animal welfare and it disgusted me. At 18, I have never looked back.

I feel great! :-)

I wish you the best of luck, you can do it, I believe in you! :-)

hmmm, well thats a tuffie... all i know is that i could NEVA become a veggie.. Italian here, all we eat is meat! lol jk

I have given it up for lent, and though it's coming to an end, i really think i will miss being a vegetarian!

I'm allergic to meat protein. There are so many other ways to get protein...beans, dairy etc..

For me, it was seeing the Meet Your Meat video -
http://www.chooseveg.com/animal-cruelty....

There are tons of good vegetarian sources of protein... almonds, black beans, cashews, fake meats, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), kidney beans, lentils, peanut butter, pinto beans, seitan, soybeans, soymilk, sunflower seeds, textured vegetable protein (TVP), and tofu.

You could show your mom this site:
http://www.tryveg.com/cfi/toc/?v=08sourc...

Good luck!

consume more dairy foods and fake meats such as tofu and tempeh..workout regularly so that ur body utilizes those proteins well..trust me,ur mum will soon be so proud that you gave up eating meat..

I am on a "lacto-vegetarian" type of eating. It means I can eat dairy products and eggs, along with fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts and grains. However, I have to add fish and chicken, because I do miss the flavor and protein. If you can try this method, it might work for you. I am losing weight, which is especially important due to my heart condition. I also drink whey protein drinks when I feel a little bit fatigued. I will eat red meat after awhile, and don't consider myself a true "vegetarian", I am just SEVERELY reducing the meats when and where I can. Eggs, whey protein drinks, fish, chicken breasts, tofu, and beans are all high in protein. Good luck.

After I turned 30, my body stopped being able to digest meat properly. Then I started dating a vegetarian. In 2001, there was the McDonald's Chicken Head incident in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and I remember saying to myself that it was a strong argument for vegetarianism. That same year, I read "Fast Food Nation." Then one day just after New Year's 2002, I was eating these wings, and I was just so disgusted, I said to myself, "This isn't working, I'm going vegetarian."

So I got a bunch of books, did some research, learned about the dairy-veal connection, learned about how the hens kept for eggs are treated, and I realized that I really had to go vegan. So a few months later, I was a vegan.

As for the protein, you mom has fallen for the protein myth, but she is certainly not alone. You really don't need that much, only .3 to .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Excess protein causes you to lose calcium from your bones and taxes your kidneys. And ask your mom if she has heard of any case of protein deficiency in any industrialized nation. Unless you're anorexic or on a junk-food diet, chances are you're getting enough protein.
