Do you consider shrimp a sentient being?!

Question: Shellfish was the hardest thing for me to give up and the one thing I miss. I know there are other environmental and ethical reasons to give up shrimp but if none of those existed would you feel bad eating the shrimp?

Actually, Professor Robert Elwood, an expert in animal behavior at Queen’s University, Belfast, did a study on prawns and found that yes, they do feel pain and strive to avoid it. For further information see our post here:

So yes, I would feel bad about eating shrimp. You can read his study details and decide for yourself.
Hope this helps.

Shrimp are vegetables. Chow Down!

No.

they are aware of their environment, actively search out food, and a mate so, yes they are sentient.
pardon me but i am a meat eater. aside from some sea life such as Salmon i will eat most of the meaty products that you will find i the grocery store.

doesn't matter if it is an ant, shrimp, cow or elephant :) to me, i feel bad to kill or eat any life form. you should feel bad! because the shrimp died for you :) he was happy swimmin around with his family.

Yes. It is a creature who I believe is capable of feeling pain. I have the same feelings toward lobsters, crabs, oysters, mussels, crayfish, etc. Note: I have related information on my website if you're interested. Click on the 'animals for food' link, then at the bottom in the page index click on 'from the sea'.

All living things are sentient, I wouldn't eat anything that had to be killed for my dinner no matter how small or seemingly insignificant it is. I'm allergic to shellfish and I never ate seafood before becoming vegetarian; but yes I would feel bad eating a shrimp, when I don't need to eat it because people can live without eating any living things.

No. I don't feel bad. Shrimp are very healthy if eaten in moderation.

God I love to eat Shrimp!

I think that although shrimp are a life form, to endow them with the characteristics of higher life forms ,is a step in the wrong direction. If you are strictly vegan, then shrimp is a definite no-no,they are basically sea going cockroaches anyway, delicious though, with garlic butter mmmmm! If .on the other hand you,re not a strict vegan, then, eat up, before those bloody whales get em all!

I think only humans, chimps, gorillas and elephants are sentient beings. All other lifeforms are unaware of there own existance.
