People will never believe me when i say i'm a vegetarian?!

Question: about 3 weeks ago i decided that i wasn't going to eat meat anymore, so that obviously makes me a vegetarian. but i feel like i don't fit the vegetarian stereotype. i am not very skinny, i have blonde hair and blue eyes, and when most people think of a vegetarian, they think of a hippie type of person, or at least skinny. i feel like i don't fit the mold. anyone else ever feel this way?

Congrats on becoming veg. I don't think your a "fake vegetarian", but like Adam suggested you just need to expand your research a little further than just PETA. There is alot more to learn out there than just animal cruelty and violence.

Every one is an individual, there is no vegetarian mold. You shouldn't feel like you have to fit a stereotype just to become veg or vegan. There are hippies who aren't veg and vegans who aren't hippie.

Don't worry what any one else thinks or if they believe you. Just know your doing some thing good for yourself, the animals and the environment.

Good luck =0)

There is no vegetarian "mold".

Not all vegetarians are skinny, cause you can still eat junk food and be a vegetarian.

I have no idea what blonde hair and blue eyes has to do with being a vegetarian or not being one.

It's not what you look like that matters (Well as long as your healthy). It's about choosing not to eat meat.

Are you in it just for the looks????

If it is what you want and it makes you happy and health then make your own mold!:)

I'm a blonde vegetarian, and I made my own choice when I was just six, which I still abide by. There is no mould.

Most vegans I know are of average build or a little overweight.
I don't believe the diet has any impact on weight or build, unless you don't eat properly.

I wasn't aware there was a mould, actually, I've founds vegetarians to be as diverse as the rest of the populace.

since when is having blonde hair and blue eyes not vegetarian? i have blonde hair and blue eyes and people believe me. if they refuse to believe you then if you eat by them only eat veg foods. they will notice that your sandwich is meatless.

Vegetarians' looks vary. They're just people.

I don't think "most people" think of hippies or skinny people when they think vegetarian.

Alicia Silverstone, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, Billy Jo Armstrong.... none of them look anything alike!

There is no such thing as a "vegetarian stereotype". All it means is that you don't eat meat (or gelatin, etc). How you look or dress has got nothing to do with it. You're being brainwashed by pop culture. Don't allow that to happen. Take control of your life and define it by your terms.

When I became vegan, I sent away for my poncho and 22-inch waist. I think they got lost in the mail. :-(

It doesn't matter what people think. You became vegetarian by choice as did many other people. There is no "stereotype" image of a vegetarian. Yes there are many skinny ones, and some of them are in fact hippies, but not all of us are. I am not very skinny -- average -- and deffinately not a hippy and I am still vegetarian because of the food choices and lifestyle that I have adopted.

I am sure there are many people who share the same feelings, but WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK VEGETARIANS SHOULD LOOK LIKE IS NOT IMPORTANT !! Just supporting the thought, or stop becomming vegetarian because of what your friends, or social groups think is just proving that the stereotype mold is accurate.

The only clothing factor that would envolve veggies, is the fact that vegans do not wear animal cruelty clothing including fur, leather etc. That is similar to the hippie wardrobe, but that does not mean that you are a hippie because you are a vegan.

There's no such thing as a stereotypical vegetarian. What on Earth would eye color have to do with anything? Do you think there were no blonde haired, blue eyed hippies? That's just silly.

I think if you want people to take you seriously and not apply stereotypes to you, you need to give up your own predetermined notions of what a vegetarian is. Given time and experience you'll discover that we are everyone: fat and thin, short and tall, blonde and brunette, black and white. There is no mold to fit.

I gained weight when I was a vegetarian. I didn't realize you weren't supposed to substitute steak and chicken with cookies and potato chips :)

hehe that sounds like a stereotype from the 60's.....these days even athletes are vegetarian/vegan.....
