Why is there BEEF in my cupcake!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Question: This makes me sick! Why would they put beef in CUPCAKES! There is no reason (even meat-eaters agree with me on this one) why there should be meat in SNACKS. Especially CHOCOLATE!

In any case I am *never* buying Hostess snack cakes ever again!

They put it in there because it's cheap, readily available and because most people don't give a flying fart in space what they eat. Yes, it's disgusting. You should let them know you're not buying their product anymore because of the beef fat; one person's boycott won't change anything, but if enough people express their objections maybe, just maybe, it'll have an impact.

In the meantime, make your own cupcakes without all the nastiness. "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" has some fabulous recipes, including one for "Fauxstess Cupcakes" that beat the Hostess variety by a mile.

Twinkies contain beef tallow as well.

what are you talking about? Where did you get beef in your cupcake?

they do the same to twinkies...I don't eat meat either, but it's basically because it helps preserve it somehow, otherwise, a baked good will go stale in a couple of days. beef fat is cheaper.

Are you sure it was a cupcake? That doesn't sound attractive. Where on the box does it say?

This only one reason why it's better to prepare your food yourself-there are even worse things in those than beef fat.

I don't know - I never eat anything until I've read the label. There's a reason for junk food being called junk food.

Yeah I know! I tell people all the time about twinkies, all meat eaters and all of them said they wont be eatin them anymore!

its cheaper to use animal gelatine than plant pectin.

tell me about it, it sucks :(

Because we come from very primitive people who until recently used lard in just about everything. Nowadays other products are used, but lard and tallow may be hiding in the ingredients list by a nicer sounding name.

That sounds GROSS. I wonder what the marketing department and Hostess were thinking...

Ya got me. You might want to ask Hostess why they feel compelled to add beef fat to their cupcakes. Chances are, though, they're not going to give a flying whatsis about what vegetarians think. It's why I never buy food without reading the label. And I don't buy most conventional brands anyway.

And the same thing happened with my vegetarian boyfriend. He bought it from a vending machine in my apartment building. I looked at the label out of morbid curiosity to see what crap they put in there, and was horrified to see that they may add beef fat. So I had to tell him. It didn't stop him from making the same mistake a few months later, and I had to tell him again.

Most natural foods stores (or even Whole Foods) will have veg*an baked goods, although nothing like cupcakes. There are vegan bakeries you can order from, though.
