Diabetic but I want to stop eating meat & need protein what do you suggest?!


Question: I eat protein at every meal. Yogurt for breakfast. Usually a peice of chicken or fish with lunch & dinner. If I just ate broccoli & other veggies I don't think I would get enough protein. How can I figure the amounts I am getting from meat & get enough per meal with just veggies? I am also afraid I will get tired of veggies so all suggestions in how I can do this are appreciated.

Take Protein Supplements, also eat soy. My uncle also has diabetes he used this website.

I take Omega 3 Protein Supplements, personally I feel almost steroid like effects and I'm going to stop taking it.
But you should take supplements, it's a good way to compromise for not eating meat. And Meat gets boring after a while anyways.

beans have a lot of protein. you could also try protein shakes.

Keep eating meat. My wife is diabetic and has to eat 6 potions of meat per day for protein.

There are lots of foods high in proteins. There are veggies that have protein. Beans, nuts and many non-meat vegetarian "meat" products. There and MANY of those non-meat products that are not made with any soy. Just read the labels. Click on the link below. It's a very good site with nutritional information for vegetarians.

Hate to say it but being a diabetic will make your options limited and then add your allergy to soy and whey ... that takes it to a whole new level of limitations!

Several answers recommend you do protein shakes and legumes but those are high carbohydrate and will be more restricted for you because of their conversion to sugar in your body.

You can remove red meat but keep eggs, chicken, and fish in order to get the protein you need.

You can eat things like broccoli and cheese casserole, cauliflower cheese (has added mustard powder which gives it a nice bit of a zip), french-style green beans steamed and then tossed in a small amount of butter with sea salt and some toasted slivered almonds ... there are tons of ideas and recipes around for veggie dishes. Just avoid those with bread crumbs, chips, noodles, and rice. You can always put the veggies on a single serving of rice but casseroles will have too many carbs for you.

Eat only whole grain breads ... the heavier the loaf of bread, the more dense it is and the better it will be for you. It will digest more slowly thus helping your body convert it to sugar more slowly.

I would keep eating meat, but perhaps just chicken, turkey and fish. I'm diabetic myself and that is what I eat, but i do eat red meat sometimes, like this Sunday, I will eat it. The other things high in protein are nuts, beans, and lentils. My diabetes is completely under control eating this way, plus I also eat 5 to 7 servings of veggies and fruit a day. I never get tired of eating this way, but if I have a craving, I reach for the peanut butter or skinny cow ice cream.

Pulses (beans, peas, peanuts, lentils), grains (including cereals, couscous, brown rice, wholemeal pasta and breads), nuts and seeds. More protein than you can shake a stick at (assuming, of course, that you would want to shake a stick at protein).

Don't be afraid to try something new, like seitan, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet, etc.

Seeing that you are diabetic, try to get hold of bitter melon, as that helps to keep your blood sugar under control. You might be able to find it fresh at Chinese, Vietnamese or Indian grocers. It's also available dried, to make into a tea. (It's called karela in India, gohyah in China and kho qua in Vietnam.) You'll find it fairly bitter at first, but you'll quickly get used to it. Fried bitter melon strips with a little salt ... mmmmm!

How about hoummos with pitta bread or beans or toast. Those both have protein. Basically any nuts or pulses will do!
