I think I am addicted to the chemicals that people put in meat and cheese products so how I stop?!


Question: I hear they are addicting and I do crave them. I have watched all the Peta videos and have become vegan and vegetarian for times but my body eventually starts craving meat again (I really don't have a problem with dairy). How can I stop this? I *know* meat is bad for you but like I said... it IS addicting!

If you want to stop, you stop. It is nice to think of oneself as addicted to something, and, yes, if you are used to eating meat, you might like to think of yourself as addicted to certain dishes (are you addicted to liver?)

If you want to be a vegetarian or a vegan, then just decide that that is what you want to do and deal with it. Try thinking of yourself being in a foreign country where you cannot get a particularly favorite kind of food. Would you die? Nope. Would you suffer intense cravings? Only psychological ones, not real physical ones.

You are not in a foreign country, and you can get meat if you want to, so you have to decide if you want to, or if you know that you don't want to eat meat. Many vegetarian cookbooks do offer "meat-like" and "cheese-like" recipes. You could try those.

I've never thought about meat being addictive. I know I turned my back on it about 4+ years ago and have never missed it. However, I know I couldn't live without cheese. I think a lot of it has to do with cultural influence. You can't drive a mile in a populated area without seeing a McD's or B.K. A lot of restaurants are very meat oriented, even most of the ones that have vegetarian options. The meat industry knows this. They know that *most* people will respond to "what everybody else is eating". That's why I take such pride in being a little different. Even when I smell a burger and I go back to my meat days I remember, there's a reason I'm doing this. And that's enough for me.

that actually true in the case of fast food. they put chemicals in burgers that give it the taste and smell that makes you want more. they actuallly perfected the smell and taste so people will keep coming back. it was really hard for me to stop, and i went through withdrawals, but whenever i got hungry, i just ate things that fill you up fast like potatoes or rice. it helps if you have self-control too lol. good luck

It's probably not the chemicals that is the source of your addiction.

Diet is heavily influenced by habit and upbringing. Familiarity with certain foods can be tough to break. Just think of why certain foods are called "comfort food" - because you probably associate the consumption of those foods with family meals at holidays or family meals in childhood.

You can do one of the following:
1. Slowly wean yourself off the foods by eating them occasionally, and preferably from sources that have organic and/or free range products (like Chipotle, for example, if you eat out a lot).
2. Try to eat the soy versions of the products you are familiar with. Yves brand of soy products such as cheese are fairly good, and there are many brands of meatless soy products such as burgers, chicken nuggets, etc.
3. Explore new foods and find what you love the most, treat yourself to those foods more often for a few weeks, and create NEW comfort foods or NEW favorites. For example, you might like the cuisine of India (mostly vegetarian), Thai food, or Mediterranean cuisine. Find a few favorites and create new habits, new preferences, and you won't miss the old foods so much.

Just stop eating them. They aren't addictive. I think the problem is addiction to PETA propaganda videos.

I think you are right. There are so many hormones and chemicals in the animals, that your body is use to eating them.

I was like that with sugary foods.

I kept thinking about how much sugar was hurting my body and i gave it up. so now I am don't crave it.

Health lots of fruits and vegetables. - and do detox, see if that works.

I had the same situation five years ago. Processed foods have "taste enhancers" in them and the non-organic animal products contain low-level antibiotics. They are the same antibiotics that the FDA had the medical industry take out of circulation for human use. The antibiotics used on cows, pigs, and chickens will no longer work on humans. One theory is that we developed a tolerance to those vaccines because the body had adapted to them already being present due to the consumption of animal products. I experienced withdrawal symptoms when I first started cutting out meat. You probably are too. You will just have to go gradual until your body full adjust to your slowly becoming a vegetarian. In the mean time try incorporating some mock meats and vegan cheese if you need too. I wouldn't suggest cold turkey vegetarianism for you. You may get head aches like when I first did. There is nothing wrong with working towards it. It worked me. I'm a vegan now.

I would just think about the farm animals and how most of them are dismembered while they are STILL ALIVE and FULLY CONSCIOUS. That would be it for me!

It is addicTIVE.

Dont stop eating meat because you watched PETA videos. PETA is a crap organization.Of course you are going to believe you are addicted to it, that is what they are telling you, does not mean it is true.

If you do it, do it for your own reasons, if and when you are truly ready it should be easy.
